Marbelite pond Can't Post

Hi everybody,

I am a new member and have been following the Forum for some weeks. It is a great site especially for a novice like me. I have really learned a lot. My pond was filled with water in the middle of December 2001 (10 000 liters) and I unexpectedly received my first 5 Koi's for Christmas (10 cm in length). Water was not ready but they went in and are doing fine. Filter seems to be maturing nicely and I can almost see the bottom of the pond which is 1meter down. Please allow me 1 question for today (I am sure many will follow later). It is a concrete pond covered with Marbelite. Marbelite is mainly used in the construction of swimming pools here and it basically waterproofs the concrete. I have never seen this mentioned in any of the Koi sites that I have visited. Is this unique to South Africa or is it used elsewhere and if so is it good or bad for Koi. Any ideas.

Regards
Leon

Re: [Leon] Marbelite pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Leon,

I am from the UK and my friend has used Marbelite on his pond. He has not had any problems so far. The only problem I am aware of with marbelite is that after a long period (5 years +) of changing tempertures (-10 up to 30 ). the marbelite will loose its grip on the concrete. This will not be noticable at all unless after this 5 year+ period you decide to drain all the water from the pond. The presure will no longer be the major element holding the marbelite to the concrete and after a few days without water in the pond, it will slimply crumble off. You shouldn't need to worry about this at the moment, but just keep this in mind incase you have to empty the pond one day.

Stuart,
Thank you for your response. At least I am not the only one with a marbelite pond. It seemed strange to me that it is not commonly used unless people do not mention it because it is used so often. I am happy to hear that it is fine for Koi because it is such an effective an neat finish. I have used a charcoal colour which really contrasts well with the fish. I might not have any temperature problems since the water temperature would probably range between 18 and 28 degrees C if I use my swimming pool as an indicator.

I must say this pond was 1 of the best ideas I have had in a long time (or is it to soon to say). Have my breakfast next to it each morning and watch the Koi feed. Might be my imagination but they look much bigger than a month ago. I can now really understand the passion I have seen on the forum from other ponders.

Regards,
Leon

Hi Leon,

Its good to hear you are already enjoying watching your koi eat their breakfast, while you eat yours. Another year and you'll turn you swimming pool into a koi pond. Thats how bad it gets you. Sly

Happy Koi'ing

Stuart
