My DIY Moving Bed Filter Can't Post

Hi all,

I have been in a small project to build my own moving bed filter. It's done and here is a picture of it Smile.

It is 2 15 gallon drums. 1st one made into a mechanical filter with green mat and jap mat as waste trapping media. The 2nd drum has air stones at the bottom to churn the home-made bio media that is cut up 1-2 cm length drinking straws. Water gets pumped into the 1st drum with a 2,800LpH pump and the 2nd drum is gravity fed. Both drums has drain pipes for easy flushing! Tongue

I cut hundreds of drinking straws into small pieces, really tiring. But the satisfaction from the result is yet to be felt.. Smile. Anyway, I hope this filter will improve the water quality of my pond even if it is not as competitively good as the K1 media or will bring significant difference. And hopefully I've contributed an idea for whoever who wants to find a way to cut cost on bio media. I welcome any feedbacks.

Hehe. Laugh

Hi Azli,

The filter is running fine and serving it's purpose by aerating and biologically filtering the water. My comment on the media is, it churns very well with the air bubbles and now I can see a brownish coat appearing on the inner surface of the straws. I spot no difference on the outer surface of the straws. I guess it could be because of the shoulder rub shoulder environment among the straws.

Roger

How about putting 1 layer of filter material on top to reduce the straws movement?

Btw, for the straws, do you want to try the big one? Those normally for "cendol" or "ABC"? More surface area though.
