Have to give specifics Danny. Have you ever kept pet fish before in an aquarium at least? Or are you totally new to fish? Where are you located in the world. How big is your proposed pond, what are the dimensions length, width, depth. How much water volume. How about your filtration. How much area are you going to alot to it. Do you have a type of filtration in mind?

Do you have a solid plan of what you're going to do? If not I highly suggest you stop everything and get a pen and paper and start drawing your plans. Or else you'll regret it and end up with basically a very large hole in the ground.

............ and a big hole in the pocket ..SmileSmileSmile .

Hi Danny ,

I don't even think you can move or conceal the man-hole , unless with the written approval from Public Utility Board , even though this man-hole might be in your premises . Would strongly suggest you "test the ground work " for hidden pipes before digging further . There might be water supply pipes or even underground gas pipes and it would leads a hobby or passion into a nightmare if these checks are not conducted prior digging .

This is a friendly and helpful forum . You can ask anything from pond plans to filterations and anything you might need for pond construction and you will always be answered by somebody here .

Cheers and Good Luck
David

it may be part of your house's septic tank. if it is sewer inspection chamber or internal manhole you may divert the sewer and manhole. can post a photo to show the whole structure?

Danny,

My comment is that it's a daring move. Make sure your manhole pipes are re-connected properly otherwise, I forsee you will have problems with the sewage from the back.

Re: [dannysao] My Fish Pond construction [In reply to] Can't Post

Danny, manhole are created to provide for maintenance and servicing... just in case the sewage pipe are choked, the manholes are opened for inspection and repair access. Hence, manholes are created at a specific interval along the length of the sewage pipe. By removing the manhole and reconnecting the pipe, the length unaccessible become too long... and if your sewage pipe ever get choked..... you are dead. Having your pond on top of your sewage pipe, if you sewage get choked, the fish would still be fine... but you won't. If the choke happens to occur below your fish pond, good luck to you. Murphy's law doesn't usually apply but when it does, it can be a huge disaster in this case. Better off, divert the whole pipe completely and have it run around the pond.. but sewage pipe needs to be straight and if you bend and turn it, you will need more new manholes. Life is tricky and when it comes to sewage, it gets shitty too..

Re: [water] My Fish Pond construction [In reply to] Can't Post

because of this, I have added 2 manhole at both end, left and right, of the fish pond, and a new pipe, 8 in, will be made between these 2 new man hole, i need to pay RM 1k for these 2 new manholes. hence now the pipe under fish pond is straight, I have no room to divert the pipe any more, because the pipe need to be straight, minimised the bend. You can see the man hole done months long ago.

Re: [dannysao] My Fish Pond construction [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Danny,

I think you should construct the pond width up to the external floor
tile edges to gain maybe an extra 2'0" wide for your pond. That will be
better for the koi, better pond size and the better overall scale and
proportion in that semi-enclosed environment.

BTW, go for a better grade ready mixed concrete for the whole pond's base
and wall in one time concreting and I am not sure whether the BRC mesh used
is okay. It look rather thin, IMHO. Thank you.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Re: [thiamhwa] My Fish Pond construction [In reply to] Can't Post

I am not sure I can do that now, since the foundation already done..may be today the wall already up..they are fast..and my contractor is not really good, he can't even draw up a plan for the fish pond about the design, everything is in his head. So more fish pond he give me free after I reno my whole house with him..so I don't want to demand so much actually..

Hi
the shape is out now, the filter seem smaller that I expected..building the feature wall now..some question on the wall, between the option 1- water flow down from top to bottom of the wall, option 2 - water come out in the middle of the wal..fountain..which one is recommended for maintenance purposes? I prefer the water flow down, it is not so noisy..but might have algea problem on the wall after some times..

Hi Danny,

I think your main pond will be very small - less than 9' in lengthx4' wide (if your filter is 30%). My main pond is 18'x5' and it is relatively very small. You might want to consider extending the length of your main pond and pay your contractor extras, since you mentioned he is giving it to you free - right now.

What will be your pond's depth?

Re: [Epal63] My Fish Pond construction [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi
Depth is 2 ft, I don't want to have too depth ,i got small kids, 2 years old, i need to consider the risk of kid fall into the pond, human safety come first.
As of length, that is max it can go, otherwise I will not be able to do the pergola, bcos pergola need to get the load from the pilar near my side door, and a footing near the fish pond side. This is first time I am experiencing fish pond, so prefer to start small, so that it is manageable.

you can see from this pic, there were 2 pvc pipe in the middle of the pond, that will be a bottom drain hole, which will be suck to the filter section, you can see one pvc pipe at the filter are, that is where the water from pond will be suck there.

My contractor tell me there will be 2 pump require, his swimming pool design, one to such the water from bottom of pond to filter section, another one from filter section to the feature wall water flow.

Also I cannot make the pond more deeper, due to there is a sewage pipe beneath my pond..

I think dream and reality cannot always be same..

Re: [dannysao] My Fish Pond construction [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Danny,

I believe your house to the wall-fence is 10'. If that is being the case, your pond set-up would be similar to mine. You might want to take a look at my pond picture in the Members Pond Forum, thread - "Another Shallow Pond". It also has a pond design/sketch by ThiamHwa. The difference is that my house is 1.5' above the original ground level, ie I had a few steps-up to enter my house.

As a result, I dug 1.5' below the ground and raised the pond to the house level. Total 3' but nett is only 2.5' water depth. Bear in mind, you might have to leave a few inches at the top, ie below the water level. I hope your pond depth of 2' is the water depth, otherwise, it will be very shallow.Wink Many cifus will tell you that it's too shallow for kois....as mine is already below par.Crazy

I also have a pergolas built over my pond. Not sure why it becomes your restriction to extend your pond length. You might want to show us a sketch of your pond's plan.

Yours koi pond almost same as mind, got the sewage pipe below. Do you have the pic to show ur pergola? What is the impact if there is no pergola and the pond is open air?? over heated? The reason i did not put pergola is due to the polycarbonate roof will be very noisy when rain..

Hi Danny,

I have to take a photo of the pergolas as I don't have one off-hand.

Without the pergolas, I guess there will be more sunshine on the pond water. Overheated? I cannot comment. Noisy during raining, yes, but to me - blocking/reducing rain from coming into the house is more important. So, you can still enjoy your koi during the rain.Cool
