Dear Agil

There are tons of info on building a filtering system, including diagrams, etc. At the home page, just point your mouse to "Koi Discussion " and go to "Pond Construction and Water Filtering System" and if you come across any technical terms that go over your head, just give us a yell!

Offhand, the general rules of a filter box is that it has a surface area 30% of that of your pond, has a pump that circulates water about 1-2 times and hour and a pH buffer like corals or oyster shells. If you can build one, a "wet and dry" trickle filter works better than a conventional submerged filter. You can't miss this topic just browsing through the threads.

A few common terms rolling of my head are :

Japanese mats - these are filtering material which carry good germs
Brushes - acts to trap solid waste and normally put in the first chamber
Bio-balls - used as bio-filter for good germs in a trickle system
bad bugs - baddie bacteria, parasites, leeches
good bugs - nitrifying bacteria
test kits - standard equipment for
koikeepers to test for ammonia, nitrites, pH, nitrates
Koi-kichi - koi crazy, that's us...

Common abbreviations:
lol - laughing out loud
do - dissolved oxygen
doc-dissolved organic compounds
syt - sweet young thing

How's life in Pakistan? My favourite food is garlic Naan with Tandoori chicken. Yummy. [biggrin]

Tell us how you are doing with your new pond and have fun!

Cheerio.

Best regards

Smile
Josh

Dear Sir,
Thanks, what i can't seem to find are diagrams od the filteration systems.
Got the principle of the pond and its relating systems down, but then are there anythings that i need to know before i get the system on the role.
I suppose this is just jitters for a new project, nervous a bit, no a lot.
Lot of info. available, and a bit intimidating.
Life's good here, very busy, rush rush.
Every one seems to be runnig for something.
Well i just got to relax, so gotten, or trying to get started into this world of "KOI KICHI".

Hi Agil

Sorry, the diagram has disappeared from the home page. Used to be there. Anyway you can see the diagram by following this link:
http://www.koi.com.my/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000067.html

There is a 6 page discussion on the trickle filter system and if there are terms you don't understand, just let us know!

In koi keeping, the most important thing is water quality. "Take care of the water and the koi will take care of themselves" is an old saying coined by some wise bearded white haired sage of the koi world many moons ago.

Koi Keeping sure is a splashing way to relax and enjoy beauty in motion. Seeing your busyness in Pakistan, I dare say you need something to smoothen up your nerves after a stressful day at work. Jump into it!

Best regards

Hello,
My name is Hans. I have read your topic about "No info. available for this kind of project". So what kind of a project are you refering to ?
If you look through slowly in this forum. There are tons of informations about any filtration for koi ponds unless you are talking about commercial projects.
Concerning a Trickle filter, what is very effective if you do it a proper way. But you still would need a mechanical filter in a simple language a settlement chamber with brushes to block all the dirts before it goes to your Trickle filter otherwise it will block your Trickle filter sooner or later. So my suggestion to you, If you have the space then have a big settlement chambers including Mechanical filtration using Bristle brushes, Matting or Netting.
And then go to Trickle tower.
All what is a Trickle tower, it is a wet and dry filter system what grows bacteria alot faster at a smaller space as than having a Biological system submerge. So, if you look through the previous topics in this forum you will find what you are looking for. There alot of sketches & drawings so it makes no sense if you asking for sketches since you have not given any info. about your location or your pond in or the above ground or indoor or outdoor and more details.

Regards,
Hans

Dear Agil

Howdy. Now my mouth is watering just thinking of Chicken Masala. It's delicious is nice. The advantage of staying in multi-cultural country like Malaysia is the chance to taste lots of different types of food.

Concrete can be used to build a pond but you must wait for it to cure or lime which is alkaline will leech into the pond and bring the pH up too high for comfort. Once the pH stays stays at 8 and below consistently it should be safe to release some koi into the water.

Good to hear from Ham who is a mentor to many of us here. If you care to provide more details of your pond, he would be able to provide lots of great tips on how to build a great pond!

Best wishes

Smile

Josh
