Need some advices on filter setup.... Can't Post

Hello guys,

Could anyone help suggest what i can do to upgrade/add-on to my pond set-up. It does not have a bottom drain, nor hold any filter chambers to filter/purify the water. I am thinking of incorporating on a DIY Bakki Shower for a second filter, w/ perhaps some Bacteria House as the media.. Attached are some photos of the pond. Dimensions are;

Length 4.5m
Width 1m
Depth 1m

Tonnage ????? SmileSmile Sorry, don't know how to calculate tonnage.

i wud like to suggest u use BH instead of bio balls (Bakki Shower)... i heard of people use BH in sand filter too (submerged system) soo u have a complete submerged n shower BH... just a suggestion.. perhaps some BH can be put at ur water falls too..Sly

btw i like ur blue drum...Smile

ur airline look very good.. r ur blower noisy?? i think the smells of 'benzine' come from blower.. no smells from my airlineShocked

Re: [koi@kit] Need some advices on filter setup.... [In reply to] Can't Post

hahahaha.... Thanks Kit,

I like the blue drum too, infact that is my 1st ever protype that i have made. I agree with what you said, i might top-up the trickle tower with some BH. WinkSmile As for the sand filter, i'm still wondering on how to oxygenate the BH if i decide to put some in, as i understand that they still need oxygen to work properly.

Have also found the cause for the Benzine smell. Apparently it came from an open firing sesion a few meteres from the pond. SlySlySlySly. So no Worries.... I like the airline too.....

Hi kemeer,

You have a very natural looking pond there. It seem to me that you can easily
afford to raise your water level by another 6 inches higher to increase the
capacity in your pond. Based on the dimensions that you have provided,
it work out to be 750 gallons or 3.5 tons of water in your pond.
Since you have no bottom drain or settlement chamber in your pond set-up,
Cifu Kit is correct to suggest that Bakki Shower could be the option to follow.
You could build the Bakki Shower higher at ground level but hidden away behind
your rockscaped waterfall. The system will be pump fed direct from the pond
and you could also add to it a bigger bottom fibrous tank to house the
submerged Bacteria House too with the returning water flowing by gravity back
to the pond.

Hi Kemeer

Nice looking pond you have there.LaughLaughLaugh. I got question, what's the function of sand filter in one of your picture. What's inside actually.

Purpose of sand filter is simply to polish the water so that it looks shinny and clear. Guarantee no green water problem. What's inside a sand filter is......... sand.Wink Some may even put other medias in it. This filter set-up does not control the nitrates, nitrites and ammonia in your pond. It just makes your water clear looking. Do not confuse yourself when differentiating your water quality between clear water and good water. Clear water may still have other dissolved particles in the water that can negatively affect the growth/development of your kois....

The only thing you have to consider when planning to set-up a filter is, how you want the quality of water for the kois to live in. For controlling nitrates, amonia, nitrites you will basically need a biological filter and mechanical filter.

PM, kit, he's more expert in this area, as i too am still learning from the GURUS!!!! heheheheheWinkCoolLaughSly

Re: [kemeer] Need some advices on filter setup.... [In reply to] Can't Post

hi arokoi..

what cifu kemeer explain to u abt clear water n good water is very correct... dont be fool by 'clear' water..

lot of people go to my pond n see lots of particles all over the pond water, reasons..
1.my areation is like 'spa' (according to paul) so any particles will be suck in or over flow to waste.
2.i m famous for 'over feeding' my koi, if u see floating koi poo on my water dats mean my koi's digestion is not good
'broken' poo shows a good digestion in koi body (as told by cifu paul) even when i over feed my koi.
3.my pond water always has a oily tint on the surface as i feed my koi 2 x paste food a day..
4.my water slightly greenich (not bluish yet), not crystal clear, but my eat eat 12kg of koi food a mth, 9 x a day...
i only keep 13 koi..

wat i m trying to say is.. my water is greenish, lots of particles, oily surface... 'bad water condition rite?
well.. my koi cant stop eating n cant stop growing.. dats more important to me..hehehheheheSly

cheers
kit

bottom drain: is it possible for you to punch a hole directly to your first chamber? if you can, you can insert a 4 inch pipe at the bottom of your pond to the first chamber. put a mesh in the pipe or else your koi will end up in your filter.

and you can add a T to your bottom pipe drain and have another pipe going up to act as your surface skimmer.

yes, I have a lot of crazy ideas...Smile

your cascading waterfall seems to be doing a good job supporting a lot of good bacteria

Hey there Jarvis,

I'm afraid yes. At present it is only the sand filter and the blue drum filter which is cleaning the water. Am looking at upgrading the blue drum by using Bacteria House instead. That's a lot of BH so have to upgrade slowly. I may also install a DIY Bakki Shower either ontop of the water fall or somewhere over the smaller water fall shorter fall once i decide to get rid of the Sand filter. But still contemplating on whether i should use the shorter fall as a plant filter to purify the water. This area used to be covered with money plants till reaching the water surface.....

Hello Master Cifu kemeer Wink.

I was through the post and i saw your post regarding your filtration system. So how is it now? Have you upgrade to BH yet? Mind posting some of your latest pics of
your pond?

Re: [Dr.Kolam] Need some advices on filter setup.... [In reply to] Can't Post

hello Dr. KolamTongue,

HAHAHAHA...... Excellent RESEARCH skills..... No wonder they call you the DR. KOLAM.SlyTongueCool

For your peace of mind...Tongueheheh.... Yes i have already been using around 50kilo of BH media for a couple of years. So far no complaints. But funny enough, i have noticed that is NOT as maintenance free as you'd expect it to be. Every year, i do a full cleaning of the BH to avoid clogging. And i've also noticed that some of the Brunei Cifus have also installed filter mats dirrectly under the water out flow to trap any excess "poo". Undeniably though, i have noticed an improvement in the water clarity and have also noticed the good appetite shown by my kois. So No Worries lah.... hahaha

So DR, what do you use for filtering? SlyLaughCoolWink
