New Filter Tank Can't Post

Hi,

My main tank size is 8'x 4'x 3' High (FRP) and my filter tank is 4' x 2.5' x 2' High (FRP).
My filter tank consists of three chambers. Chamber one consists of 400 pieces bioballs, chamber two consists of 48 pieces PVC brushes with 3 airstone. Chamber three is a submersible pump chamber.
I have 9 koi sizes about 18" each.
Both tanks are not exposed to sun.

I would like to seek members' advice on:
a) How frequent should I clean the filter?
b) How to clean the filter effectively?
c) What is the effect if the tanks not exposed to sunlight?
d) How to overcome the problem of odour?
e) Do I need to add salt after cleaning the filter?

Thank you

First filter chamber should filled with brushes. Fill second chamber with green matting (synthetic matting).

The purpose of using brushes in the first chamber is to trap as much solid waste as possible so that those waste will not get into second chamber. The first chamber will act as mechanical filter and the second one will act as bio filter.

The first chamber can be cleaned as often as you wish but do not clean second chamber unless it is really necessary due to problem such as clog. Any cleaning on second chamber will disturb the bacteria and will reduce the efficiency of the bio filter substantially.

When your filter is efficient, the overall system should be odourless. As long as there are sufficient aerobic bacteria available to treat your water, it will be fine.

When there is odour, it mean that anaerobic bacteria has come into play and these sulphur producing bacteria is causing the odour you mentioned.

In normal circumstances, keep a salt concentration of 0.1% in your pond. In time of trouble, increase it to 0.3%.

There is no need to expose koi to sunlight.

With the exception of single colored koi otherwise a small amount of sunlight will help brings out the clarity of the koi. Usually 20% to 30% is more than enough daily.

Cheers.
