New Pond - How to start up? Can't Post

Hi everyone,

I just completed building my new 15t pond. The contractor has washed all the tiles and connected all the pumps. I know they used some acidic chemical to wash off the cement residue. They claimed that they have flushed off the chemicals. However, it is near impossible to drain off all the water in the bottom drain. Is it safe to just fill in the water and start commissioning the pond? Or do I have to flush off 15t of water again and refill? That would be an awful lot of water to refill. What is the right procedure to start off a new pond? How long should I run the water before I can put the koi in? Please advise. Thanks!

Hi 328,

If I were you I'll fill about a foot of water then dump 2 x 25kg swimming pool salt and give it a good brush or you can fill it right up and dump PP. This will make sure that the acid they use will be neutralisedSmile You then give it a good rinse and start filling, let the water cycle for 24hrs(add dechlorinator) You thenn go to petshop buy a few goldfish and let them test the water. If they survive in 2 to 3 days you can start introducing koi slowly a koi or 2 per day if possibleWink Don't forget to feed few pellets per day onlyTongue Good luck and enjoy your new pondSmile

Btw, it will be nice to see some pics mateTongueSmile

rgds,
Jon

Re: [Koi38] New Pond - How to start up? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Koi 38,

Thank you for your advise. If I were to fill up to a foot hight of water, dump 50kg of salt and scrub the pond, that means I will just have to dump the water and refill it again? However, if I were to fill up the pond and dump PP, I do not have to refill again?

I was advised by my regular koi breeder/seller to dump salt and leave the water there for 3 days before refilling again. The problem is it will take 1-2 days to fill up the pond... That's an awful lot of water that is wasted away...

Hi 328,

Filling the pond and adding salt or PP will definately the way to go, less workTongue. I know what you mean about wasting water coz I don't like wasting water too specially here as we are running low of water supplyPirate You can still do as I told you before, but you do need to scrub the walls and floor really good then rinse the pond well. Get your self some test fish and run the pond for 48hrs. If the test fish survived then you can start adding koi slowly and feed moderately

rgds,
Jon

PS: If the pond is full sun, let it sun bake for a few days before refilling and adding fishSmile
