New Pond plans Can't Post

I am thinking of building a second pond in my back yard. My first is too shallow for koi. It has a great water fall for all the toad birds and guppys and my two gold fish love the pond.

The second pond would be built on my patio against the house on one side. This way I have no falling leaves like in the other pond. It will get afternoon sun on one side. My plans are for it to be 4ft deep with a 5 to 6 ft pit. Most of this will be under ground level with 2ft above. 10ft by 8ft pond size.

I want to do this right with a bottom drain that runs to all filters and pumps out side of the pond. I am worried about just using a pond liner and sand. If I construct with cement what is the ph cure time or should I use some sort of paint? I have a read a few articles on this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello, send me a photo of the area, there are things to consider, #1 the foundation of the house??? By digging next to this , and lower than this, there could be structural problems, especialy if moisture or water from the pond start to weaken the ground under your houses foundation!!! I can help more, let me know!! But please consider this!!!

The house is built on pier and beam and the pond will have a retaining wall built against the house side. There are french drain in place under this area already to move any water.

Hopefully the photo is viewable.

The guy that will do this has done most of my foundation work,so I know that he will poopoo any thing that is not structurally sound.

Please let me know what you think of this area.

The material that I've read says that using a pond liner for ponds less then 5' deep is fine however you may want to brace your pond walls with hollow concrete blocks before you put in the liner so you won't need to worry about cave ins so close to your house foundation when you have a major rain. You will also need good drainage around your pond and an overflow drain for rain water. For a pond this size, you probably don't NEED a concrete pond which you would need to coat with "sanitred" or "pond armour" at high cost and mess. try this link for more info: http://www.koiphen.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26493&highlight=pond+sealers
