New Tank Can't Post

Hi All,
My 5x5x2.6 ft fibre tank is coming this saturday. Can anyone advise how I can prepare the tank, water, how long before putting my koi?

My koi is currently in another fibre tank.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul,

Just curious to know how much are you paying from the 5 x 5 x 2.6 tank ?

Dear Paul, 1)Scrub the new tank well to remove any harmful substance. 2)Place it at a suitable location away from direct sunlight to prevent green water and sunburn to koi. 3)Fill up with water at least 48hours prior to introducing your beloved koi and at the same time condition the water by adding salt to make a 0.1-0.3% concentration. This will help to reduce stress cause by netting and new environment. No need to add anti-chlorine if tap water is at least 48hrs old. Try to aerate the water prior to adding koi as this will create an oxygen rich environment which is good for them. 4)Make sure you have the standard set of water testing kit handy as you'll need to use them daily since filter is new. 5)good to have a cover of netting over the tank for safety and security reasons. Hope the above helps.

Hi dttk,
Noted your advise.

1.By my size 5x5x2.6, roughly what weight of salt I should put? I will put water to probably 15cm below brim.

2.Do I put in those bacteria that are bought off from shelf?

3.Last time, I put my koi in new water (new tank), the koi develop a layer on white slime/coating on the head/body. Is it because of chlorine? When I quickly put them in mature water (my other tank) the layer was gone and koi ok.

Thanks,
Paul Low

If you fill your water to 2.1ft level, the volume will be

Volume = 5 x 5 x 2.1
= 52.5 cubic feet
= 1.486 cubic metre
= 1.486 tons
= 1,486 kg of water

0.3 % salt = 1,486/1000 x 3
= 4.458 kg of salt.

To jump start your filter, you can add bacteria purchase from koi dealers.

Dear Paul, referring to your question abt a white ?slimy coating on the head of the koi after adding new tap water, did you also add Sodium Thiosulphate crystals to remove chlorine? As far as I know, based on a similar experience I had years ago, excessive Sod. Thiosulphate causes a whitish layer on the head, eyes and body of koi causing it to be less active, which disappears when water is changed. If this is not the case, then perhaps other members of the forum could advise. Thank you.

Hi dttk,
I add Anti-chlorine from Ocean product. Chemical name (did not chk). Its says overdose is not harmful therefore I just add without measuring.
