Hi Arun:

Nice to know a new and young koi Lover is joining us. First at all, I like to welcome you to this big family. I like to meet young koi lover, because I hardly meet someone with the same hobby when I am in this age.

First at all, what is your budget? How much are you going to pay? If you can, build your pond as big as you can. Of course, must build a professional pond.

I start rearing koi from 17, and I built myself a pond as well. My pond is about 3.5mx1.5mx2m, 10ton of water. I built this pond too deep but too small in surface area. I haven't built a filter system for my pond, because I am using a sand filter which suggested by a lauzy local koi dealer. The filter really upsad me. After a year, I am going oversea for my further study. So, the pond is being empty till now.

You are lucky, because you can get help from this forum. Remember, don't build you pond on hurry. Planning and studying is the most important thing to do with koi rearing.

I am planning to rebuild my pond as well. I plan to save a budget, so I can do this after I finish my study in Australia. There will be someone helping you further in this forum. I just can tell you my experience. Wish you all the best, and good luck.

Ig you build a pond with 11.5' x 9' x 5' deep, then you main pond will have a capacity of about 14.6 tons. You also need a filter with about 31 square feet in surface area (3 feet deep will be fine).

Combine all the above, if you build base on concrete material , you will have to spend may be RM 12,000 to RM 15,000 on the construction cost depending on your actual requirement on landscaping.

I only got about 500 ringgit....and this is my balcony area....i don't know what is the load it can take.....i'm supposing it's breakage point is around 5 tonnes give or take ? I really have no idea ! I'm planning to have it 2 feet deep is that ok ? cuz it won't be under direct sunlight...

If it is a first floor balcony, do not attempt to place even a 5 tons tank unless you really check the imposed load that the balcony can take. How many column are there supporting the balcony ? If the balcony is cantilever out, then it is very dangerous as excessive load will lead to crack and ultimate collapse.

Since you have say RM 500 , you can try use fibreglass tank that can contain say a few hundred gallon of water. The tank of this size will be able to hold may 10 small koi.

Learn how to keep koi and water before investing more on it.

Good luck !

Hi Arun
I am no expert in this area of pond building but I am totally incline to what CCH said. Use a fibreglass tank. But again, you have to check out the the structure of your balcony. In Singapore, most of us live in public house(HDB flat) and there are rules that that clearly spelled out what are the size and weight of a tank we could use. On top of that, we have to write officially to the Authority for approval. Kind of a kaisu syndrome but its good for all.
If you are attempting this hobby for the first time, may I suggest that you start it small and upgrade the hobby as time goes by. That's what most of us do in UK and Singapore. Not meant to be an insult, for RM500 you can't do much.

Regards.

thanks a lot guys....i might get a part time job during the holidays...so i might have about a thousand or so bucks to spend...thing is, how do i calculate the tolerence of my balcony ? It's on the fist floor, meaning there is like sorta a store room underneth it and do i need a fiber glass tank ?? Can't i just cement the whole place up and have some fishes ? heheehee...But, if i'm gonna build this pond, i wanna make sure I do it right and the fish are "happy" there.. Smile

Hi Arun
Take our advise and start small. Forget about building that concrete pond on the balcony. It won't work! Over the last 7 years in Singapore, I have seen many hobbyists started off "BIG" and within a year give up the hobby altogether. Very sad ending for both the hobbyist and the fish.
You have to start it RIGHT or don't start at all, otherwise alot of time and money will be lost.

Good luck.

Hi Arun,

Our friends in Singapore who stay in flat can only keep a small tank due to restriction on imposed load. Look at this thread http://www.koi.com.my/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000011.html . A simple work out will show that the limit is 1 ton.

It will be very risky to build a pond of 15 tons elevated unless you are pretty sure about the loading that the foundation as well as the column can withstand. Not to mention that if such pond is build without a proper water proofing solution, you are going to face a lot of problem.

Try to go for fibreglass tank of smaller capacity. Such solution will firstly reduce the load on the house structure. Secondly, it can be moved away just incase the structure is not able to take the load. Thirdly, the fibreglass tank is much lighter than the concrete tank that you wish to built. Even the dry concrete tank will add much weight to your structure before the water is added. Finally, it is cheaper !!

Good luck
