Newbie can use some help Can't Post

Hey All,

I am in the process of building my own pond and will be putting in a bottom drain to gravity feed my filters. My question is what is the flow rate of a 4inch bottom drain compaired to a 6 inch bottom drain. I know that 6 is better, but I am alittle worried about drilling and sealing a 6 inch bulkhead. Any help on the flow rates would be awesome.

I will post pictures of my pond progress in the next few days.

Hi Chris,

I'm also new to the hobby, but just a matter of returning the favor done to me 6 months ago, try this article i got from a koi ponder friendly sight on the netSmile http://www.pondarama.com/html/friction_loss_charts.html

Hope the article could broaden your knowledge some more.Cool In the end it's not just the size to be considered but how it all affects everything in the system. 3"-4" Pipe for bottom drain is a minimum, it's rated flow is way more than any typical small-medium pond pump can handle, not unless your planning to build a 10k-up gallon pond.Tongue Wink BDW, what pond size are you planning to build?

Hope this helps you out!!!

Albert

Re: [acuygongco] Newbie can use some help [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you so much for the article. I will read it after this post. I am in the process of building a deck with a Koi pond in the center. I have completed all the digging but need to wait until Wednesday for an inspector to come check the deck footings. My original plan was to build the pond 8x12x6. But now I have discovered a design flaw in my plans. The support beams for the deck run too close to the pond so I am unable to hang my skimmer. I am now planning on raising the pond another 2 foot inorder to use the skimmer. So it looks as if the pond will be about 8 foot deep now.

Again, thanks for the help
