Newbie's new pond Can't Post

Hi to all, my name is daniel , found this forum from the net and find the info really helpful but m confuse and cannot digest so much info. Im planning to construct a pond soon. The shape of the pond is "L" i know its not advisable but for decorative purpose so it must be in this way. The size is as per plan attached, before i read from this forum, my thought was just ask my constructor to construct it than buy filter put in fish ...kao tim. But after i go through some threads here it seem that got a lot more work to do eg. drain pipe, filteration chamber etc...... therefore i need some help as my contractor will start work soon. And also my pond depth will be only 3 ft as there is an internal drain underneath the pond, will this b a prob?

Dear Daniel

The best site on the internet that discusses pond construction according to me is KoiCymru - http://www.koicymru.co.uk/construct.htm
There is also another section on the site that discusses and shows ponds and their construction from other people from around the world. - http://www.koicymru.co.uk/ponddes.htm

I have some experience with pond building, have at look a the links below. It shows how i constructed my ponds.
10 000 L Construction - http://www.koicymru.co.uk/pondsa01.htm
32 000 L Construction - http://southafricankoi.11.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=469

Also have a look at the articles section on KoiAdventures, there some intresting articles there that might be of some help.
http://www.koiadventures.co.za/Home.aspx?Page=UsrArticles.ascx

The simples piece of advise i can give you is...Have atleast 1 bottom drain for every 10 000L.

All the best.

Hi Daniel,

You might want to read the "Shallow Pond" started by Abangk, in this forum. His pond shape is very similar to your intended pond shape.

Yes, that was quite i8mpressive...and roughly thast what i will be doing. Will also include a drain pipe but can any1 recommend pump to be use (bear in mind its a L shape pond) and whats the best filtration system/size.

Hi Daniel,

I am not a sifu but you might want to consider putting a second bottom drain - incase the 1st one gets stuck, you still have a 'back-up' drain. By having a second bottom drain, it will increase the water flowing into your filter.

Re: [danielc156] Newbie's new pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Daniel,

Based on your sketches, I think you are designing a conventional Up & Down gravity fed filtration system. I could not make out the dimension as shown in your sketches, but anyway I did a simple sketch proposal for your pond which you may want to adopt some of the thoughts that I have put in.

The scanned drawing file is quite big and when I have it reduced, the resolution quality of the drawing has faded. Please send me a 'Private Message' with your email address
so that I could forward it to you for better viewing. Thank you.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Hi Francis,

Many Thanks for re-posting the proposed design drawing. That's so much pleasing to the eye.
Hopefully others may chip in with their comments as well.

Re: [Daniel] Newbie's new pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Daniel,

For your information, I am re-posting a sectional drawing through the main pond and a typical Vortex system.
This may help you to understand better on the water flow reticulation in a filtration system. The Vortex
Chamber in this case means the Settlement Chamber.

Please note that the bottom drain used in this case is a '2 pipes system' unlike what I have drawn in your
earlier sketch plan showing a typical 1 pipe system.

In my opinion, this 2 pipes bottom drain is a better system becos' you have the option to immediately flush
out waste products which are collected in the main pond via the Dry Chamber directly to prevent ammonia
build up. If possible, try to adopt this system into your design, IMHO.

If I have some free time next week, I will post a sectional drawing showing the filtration chambers
for your reference. Thank you.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Re: [thiamhwa] Newbie's new pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Bro thiamhwa,

As requested i attached herewith the site for pond construction, the filter size should be 8 ft lenght by 4 ft width approximately 25% of pond size and i will excavate 1 ft deep + 2 ft from ground level so my total depth will be 3 ft only. Almost the whole of the pond will be cover by my roof.

My calculation total water = 8,500 litres

For the pump i need 1 or 2 pump?

Re: [danielc156] Newbie's new pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Francis,

Thank you very much for helping to post the above Sectional Filtration
Drawing of Daniel's proposed koi pond.

Daniel, I hope with this drawing, you will have a general idea of the filtration
system in a koi pond. The other half upper of the filtration chambers will be
similar in concept. I think you will require a 10'0" length and not 8'0" for the
filtration system compartments.

The pond water capacity here is about 3,000 gallon and you could do it with
either 1 or 2 pumps in your system. It all depend on the water pump capacity
turn over rate per hour. Thank you.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa
