Nitrates super high! Can't Post

Below is my earlier message on my tank. I have just done a nitrate test on my tank (with 50% water change the day before, and only 1 feeding) and to my horror the level is way out of the scale, more than 120ppm(mg/l)!!! The test solution is super dark red! Is this due to my inefficient filter system? I have verified on my tap water source and found that the tester is working fine (clear test solution, 0 nitrate content). This is a crisis as I have still 9 surviving Kois (the bug-eyed koi has pass away this morning), and so far they all seem ok to me. I have poured some Bio-enzyme solution into my tank for the time being. Pls help. I have yet to conduct Ammonia and Nitrite tests as the store ran out of the test kits.

>>I am a amatuer koi rearer with a 4 x 2.5 x 1.5 ft fibre-glass tank with a 3 stage filter system. The pond water is pumped upwards to the bottom of the 1st stage with filter mat, it overflows into the 2nd stage with corals, and underflows to the 3rd stage with filter mats, and the water outlet is at the top of the 3rd stage where it goes out to the pond. I do not have a drain-out for my settlements, and the filter system is abt 2.5 x 1 x 2 ft. I purchased these from Mainland from Fish Farm 2, #17.
Pls suggests if there could be improvements to this, and if this is a sufficient system. I have the system running for 3 weeks, and have 10 fishes in my pond of around 20 cm length. 1 of my first fish has recently developed bug-eye and is not having any appetite for food. Pls help.>>

Thanks,
WS.

Change more water and reduce your koi feeding substantially. At the same time, try to add a trickle filter if possible to cut down your nitrate. Monitor your water parameter closely and only increase feeding slowly if the parameter are within limits.

Hi,

High Nitrate indicates that your bio-filter are working correctly and efficiently. As ammonia is produced by fish, the bugs in the filter will convert it to Nitrite and then another bugs will convert it to Nitrate. Nitrate is the last product that the bio-filter will produce. And especially in the koi pond, biofilter is a Nitrate producing factory. So stop worrying about your filter.

As Mr. Khoobg suggested you may installed trickle filter (DIY) which will reduced Nitrate level substantially within a very short time. Or you can use yam tree anywhere inside your existing filter.

In the mean time, I think daily 10% water change will help your kois a lot.

Good luck.

Hi
Can you confirm if your test is indeed for Nitrates(NO3). Mainland run out of ammonia(NH3) tester but for Nitrites(NO2) and PH, I saw them on the shelves yesterday.

Where did you get your fish from?

Hi Mark,
I got the Nitrate NO3 from Mainland (also yesterday noon time), but they ran out of Ammonia. I already have the PH tester, but I wasn't looking for the Nitrite test kit. I'll probably get them together when his ammonia test kits arrive.
I got most of my fishes from Nippon Koi Farm. Mixtures of $25 to $120 fishes. The one that bug-eyed and passed away is a $25 type Sanke (low quality).
