Nitrification/ Denitrtifcation

Hi, I have actually post this massage in cyberfins but would like to put it here again for more to share their views and expertise. Please refer to the following post. Thanks ============================================= Hi, There is something about the above two processes that I am confused of. Hope any one please share your views. Nitrification - a process whereby aerobic bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate in a well oxyganated environment. In this process, the aerobic bacteria consume oxygen from the air. Denitrification - a process whereby anaerobic bacteria convert nitrate into nitrogen and some nitrous oxides in a low oxygen environment. In this process, the anaerobic bacteria consume oxygen from the oxygen part of the NO3, thereby breaking the NO3 into nitrogen and some nitrous oxides. Well, in the case of a trickle tower made to remove excessive nitrite and ammonia in the water, we must supply it with plenty of oxygen to promote nitrifcation. On the other hand, is it then correct to say that if we want our trickle tower to remove nitrate, we cut the oxygen supply to the media and pack the media densely so as to promote denitrification process? These sound logical to me but then, why do waterfalls and Doc Conrad's trickle fountains (exposed to air) remove nitrate so effectively? Please share your views and knowledge...Thanks! Regards Marcus
