Hi Lee,

I have just browsed through our Uniform Building By-Laws, 1984 and could not find any
regulations regarding koi pond construction. There are Building By-Laws for the construction
of public and commercial swimming pools and it was stated that for private swimming pool,
the approval shall be at the discreation of the Local Authority. I think the koi pond
construction falls into that catergory as well, IMHO.

I could not find anything regarding the requirements of submitting for 'Earthwork Permit'
from the Authority for earthwork excavation beyond 2'0" deep. Any members here who is a
Civil & Structural Engineer should be able to provide you the answer to your query.

Goodluck,
Thiam Hwa

Lee,

The other thing to consider is safety for the kids. I have 3 kids so when I built my pond at 6ft deep I have to consider their safety that's why my pond is half in ground and half above(as a fence). Then I added windows so small kid like my nephews and nieces don't have to look over, they can see the fish from the windowsSmile

Just my 2centsWink

Hello, safty is not mentioned often, But I have fallen into my ponds a few times! And the one I have fallen into is edged with rock, a hit on the head can be all thats needed to turn something so pretty ( koi pond) into something very sad!!! We should all take into considerations that ponds can be dangeruos for any body!!!!!
Jim
Ps. I should mention that I fell in once due to drinking alot of beer!!! The other times I just slipped when I steped on a rock!!!

Jim,

A lot of ppl don't think about safety. Here in Australia any backyard pond or swimming pool with more than 50cm depth of water has to be secured meaning cannot be accessed without unlocking a doorSmile

Safety first before anything, coz you can't assumed everything will fall into place. It doesn't matter what it is, may it be pond, swimming pool or power tools....................safety comes firstWink

Jon

Your right, water can be dangeruos!!! We all talk about how pretty our ponds and koi are, but ( maybe do to a few beers) I have almost hurt myself near my ponds!!Whenever I am out in the yard drinking a few beers I always start to play with the pond, you know cleaning it or just checking the filters, and this is not to mention CHILDREN!!! so we should remind people starting in this hobby or business that they should keep safty in mind!
