Pond Leaks or thru-wall seepage! Can't Post

My pond is an old cement pond.. Wanted to make it about 6/8 inches deeper!... had a stone mason lay up mortor/stone layers....(was told by another more experenced mason that it would not work!!!! ,...didnt bleive it!!!!). I have tried patching all cracks/seams/etc. in the walls several times... The pond still leaks or seeps to almost the level of the orginal pond!!! Have tried several products to coat the ponds... none seem to work...Hydraulic stop leak... a cement like product mixed with waters that dries very quickly... etc..
I am advised by a local store of a 2 products ... Foundation Coat and a product called...'PPK' ... The Foundations Coat product sound like the product already used(HSL,above). The PPK has RTV Silicone in it... advised that not sure of what it will do to fish!!!!!!
Anyone have any suggestions as to a product that I can use to water proof the pond interior to stop the leaks and or seepage???...
Thanks,
Jim

Hello, Look rock is great, but it is hard to use it to seal! There are just too many places that water can seep out from around the rocks! I know this sucks, but tear down the crap first MASON did, and use blocks to raise the level, these should be laid by a REAL MASON!!! then they should be filled with cement and then the outer side( the part that is not in contact with pond water ) should be sealed WATER SEALER then you can use rocks to cover the block!! These should also be cemented to the blocks, this will cover the blocks and give you the look you wanted!! There are many things to know about masonary, paying more can be cheaper!!!!The rocks should only be used as asthetic, in this case!

I think, Fiberglass would be tuff to put in place ... Stone is ruff not even surfaces , mortor joints are uneven sometimes 1/2 inch sometimes 1 -1/2 inches... stone can hang over as much as 3 or 4 inchers ... But you suggested a product ... Pond Armor...
Where can I purchasse the product?? ..
I assume it will seal the inside of the pond...
I continues to be a problem... leaks down about 1/4 inch a day...
Thanks,
Jim

Jon,
Good advise...looked up Pond Armor.. pretty sure it would work.. just paint the mortar joints with Pond Shield (3 times!!!) and should do it!!!....
However, you mentioned fiberglass... I assume mean that I should put the material donw and paint it with the fiberglass liquid resin(??) .... Do you think that I could just paint with the resin that is used on fiberglass...or would this do any good...not really famulair with the fiberglass process or the properties of the material and the resin as separate products....
thanks,
jim

How big is this pond? You might try lining it with pond liner. Then you can put a decorative layer of rock at the top edge to hold it in place. The black liner makes the pond look deeper and algae doesn't show, plus your koi won't scrape themselves up on it. If you cant get liner wide enough I have had luck gluing strips together before you install it.
Put the liner in place and then fill, it will take a few months to reestablish the exact ph and bacteria balance but it was worth it to me. Be careful with mortar it can really mess with your ph.
Good luck!

Jim,

You can try by just painting it with resin, but the problem is movement so it will crack and leak again. By adding the FG material you providing structural bonding when the joint is. I think the Pond Armor should the job as long as you follow the instruction mateTongue Good luck and remember to take you timeSmile

And I'm sure that is right... just ditn't want to hear about the cracking!!!... Rather than using the usual FG resin... am considering 'jelcoat'... a FG resin but more 'jelly' like in application.. used on boats....understand that it can be used on concreate .. intend to talk to a couple of boat rebuild people tomorrow to see how it works and if it would be ok on a pond..however, if it is the same price as the Pond Armor. . . then I'll use the Pond Armor...$80.00 US a gal....and I have to find it locally which I beleive will be a problem..

Jim,

Gel coat or top coat is the same. Again without the FG material it will not be as strong and eventually it will crack againShocked

Also to apply any FG material, your pond has to be empty as they are very toxic. It will take about a week but if if weather is good and high humidity it should only take a few days, other sign is if you don't smell the resin anymoreSmile

Good luck and keep us postedWink

After investagating 'all the above'... Have decided to go with Polyurethane . . . at $55.00 a US gal. Comes with a catalyst (Qt.) and can be ''' sprayed''' by an electric hand sprayer... A gal should give me 2 coats. No rush... Will spary over a 2 day period...
Drys clear. Ultra violet rays have no effect as with some of the others (epoxy, Latex, etc.).
