Pond Shade Can't Post

Hi Thiamhwa and everyone,

Attached is the progress on my new pond. It needs another layer to complete the smooth surface. As for 2nd picture, I have placed the 2 outflow pipes in opposite direction(to have 2 direction of water flow) as per your suggestion, Thiamhwa. Thanks. The pipe on the left is for the aeration below the skimmer to avoid food going into it during feeding. Feel free to add suggest or comment.

My next question is that, what is the best shade or roofing required for optimum koi keeping? Should I cover all the pond and allow only early and late evening sun? Or should I cover with transparent roof? Appreciate all your views and comment.

Regards

Re: [ikankoiku] Pond Shade [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Ikankoiku,

You are a brave person to be constructing the pond wall with brickwall. Hopefully,
no leakage in future. The obvious problem is usually the meeting joint between
the floor slab and the vertical wall. I would advise you to thicken up with concrete
mix at that area with a rounded corner edging and gently sloping towards the
bottom drain.

I think your returning pipings concealed on the wall are too small in sizing. Should
have provided at least 38mm to 50mm in diameter, IMHO.

Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Hi thiamhwa,

Thanks for your reply. Actually, the top portion of the pond are brick. Below it is concrete and brick mixed in parallel. I will take your advice on the thicker up the concrete mix.

Maybe the pipe is a bit small. Since the are total of 14 outlets(7 in one direction), I am hoping to have better flow strength from all the outlet with smaller pipes. It is very difficult for me to estimate actually, as I dont have the info on the relation between pipe size, pressure, pump size and pond size. I plan to wait and see and add more water features(if required) to optimize the water flow into the pond.

By the way, to all the cifus, any opinion on the pond shade or roof?

Thanks.
