Pond volume calculation Can't Post

This message is by Calvin Kuok of KL :-

Hi, I am Calvin Kook from K.L.. I am a beginer who want to keep Koi.

I wanted to build up a pond. But I don't know how to calculate the size and the volume of water in the pond. Is there any formula to do this, Please advice me. Here, I attach a plan of my pond and the measuring. Thank You!

As your pond is in such an irregular shape. Think the best way to calculate the capacity of the pond is by using a Flow Meter.

Cheers,
Ken

Ken is right. The most accurate way is to determine its volume is by flowmeter.

To estimate the size before building the pond, you can draw 1" x 1" grid around your pond drawing runing vertically and horizontally. Use triangle, rectangle or square to estimate the total surface area. Multiply the area by the depth will give the volume in cubic foot. Convert the value to cubic metre will give you value in tons.

Your need to draw the pond to scale before you can run the grid properly for accurate estimation.

Cheers.

Hi! Khoo / Ken thanks for your advice, now I konw what I should do for next step, but I still confuse in between cubic foot and tons, how to get value in tons from cubic foot. I did discussed with Mr. Robert from Syarikat Atari in Tmn. Desa, according to him, the size of the pond that i proposed, is quite small. Is that a big matter in terms of pond's size, because I am a beginner, I can't afford a big pond design which cost expensive. But I will try my best to increase the size of my pond. Please advice me in this problem. Thank you. I will workout the Plan using Graft paper according the scale as soon as posibble, with the filter design as well, I will post it later for commend. Whatever adviced that I get From you all, I appreciate very much! Thanks again!

1 metre = 3.281 feet

1 cubic metre = 3.281 x 3.281 x 3.281 cubic Foot

=> 1 cubic metre = 35.32 cubic foot

=> 1 cubic foot = 1/35.32 cubic metre

=> 1 cubic foot = 0.0283125 cubic metre.

From the value of cubic foot, just multiply them with a factor of 0.0283125 will give you the value is cubic metre and hence the value of tons.

1 cubic metre = 1 tons

Because the density of water is 1000kg/m3

=> 1 tons / m3

Cheers

Calvin,

It is true, your pond size is very small. Most of the hobbist started small but very soon regreted when their koi out grown the pond.

This size is ok if you are certain you would not keep more that say 4 to 6 koi. An over crowded pond will cause numerous dieseases to your koi.

Check books and websites for recommended number of koi per 1 square meter of surface area of pond.

If you can provide the radius of curves and locations of centre of curvature I would be able to let you know the volumn.

A very rough estimate of your pond size is about 5 tons and this size is infact small as mentioned by Frank or Atari. You may wish to consider building a pond of at least 10 tons and increase the depth of pond to 5 feet is possible (unless there is a safety concern).

Initially I've also decided to build a pond about 5-6 tons. But many people advise me to build a bigger one and no worry later. So, before I build a new pond, I think I need some advise: Let's a 10 tons pond.

1. What is the average cost to build a 10 tons pond?

2. How much is the running cost per month (approx)? water+electricity+maintenance of the pond?

3. How to maximize the limitation of land space without negeleted the safety (not too deep). Also, considering the filter size, etc. With only 6' of size land.

Hi ! Khoo and Frank, now I get the clear picture from you about the calculation.
I will draw out the pond's design plan and filter system in more detail and post it to you. But I still not happy with the size, honestly is too small. Ok! let said a 10 tons pond, can you advice me the proper size to increase based on my pond's design, instead of the depth change to 5 feet, any other solution for it, maybe the length or the width.

Another Question, as we know the pond is made by concrete/simen, when the pond is completed, what should i do(cleaning process) to make sure it is save to fill in water and put kois in. Please advice me, Thank You!

My advice would be to increase the width, 4.5 ft is too narrow. If your land permits increase the length as well.

The depth will depend whether you have children at home or is it possible to prevent children from accessing it unsupervised. In my case my children are grown, I fill my pond to about 5 ft, my nose is still above water if I need to jump in.

Use the age old method in cleaning your pond. Throw in a basket full of pineapple skin, if you could get it easily from street hawkers. The pineapple skin will release acid to neutralise the lime in concrete. When the skin ferment it would be food for bacteria to grow. After six weeks it would be ready for fish. Run your filter all the time.

Otherwise, use acid for cleaning tiles dilute it and scrub it with nylon brush.
