Prevent reverse flow from filter to pond Can't Post

Hi All,

I am in the process of constructing my pond without bottom drain. I plan to use a pump to feed water into my DIY drum filters which are located on an elevated ground. I am planning to use the design of drum filter shared here by koi38 (whom is really a big help to all of us, thanks!). However, I realize that in the event of power-cut or pump malfunction, the water in the drums may flow back to the pond with all the dirt. I am wondering would this ever happen, would the pump ever permit reverse flowing or should I put a one-way valve in between the pump and first drum to stop the reverse flow? I attach here a diagram of my filter system. All the sifu please advise. Thanks.

Definitely install a non-return valve :) (especially when your not going down the bottom drain/settlement chamber type filtration system).

Both of your filters inlet are from down-up, you can either extend the piping go up to the top and down to the bottom of the drum or make a TT for both drums.Cool

Thanks for the reply. After much consideration, I plan to change the design of my pond filteration. I decided to hack the wall of my pond to create an inverted bottom drain and place the dum filter next the pond at the same level to make use of gravity. My pond is not big, it's 6' x 6' x 3' so it will come to about 560 gallons or 2500 litres so I am using a 220 litres drum as the filter. I hope this will be sufficient, or else I can easily add another drum. My question now is about the pump capacity, I need to use pump to transfer water back to the pond. I know it is advisable to do 2-3 cycles per hour which means that I should really use a 5000litres/hour or above pump but how large this the bottom drain pvc pipe I should use? I am planning to use 2-inch pipe, will this 'suffocate' the pump? I hope to hear from all the sifus here. Thanks.

Hi etano,
Im not the expert.. but would I like to offer my proposal while learning.. correct me if Im wrong..

Rule of thumb says the filtration chambers should accommodate 30% of the pond volume for the best result. (Actually it is more to pond water treatment rather than filtration).

If you got a chance to construct the bottom drain, it is better for you to follow the recommended piping size i.e 4". You should also follow the correct technique for the bottom drainage to simplify the maintenance of your pond.

I would suggest that you add 2 more drums, one for additional filtration (perhaps TT) and the other one for a dry chamber. As for the pump, 5000l/h should be sufficient.

Best regards

Hi,

Since you are entirely redoing your filter system, what I am sharing is moot and academic. Anyway, just in case you change your mind and want to retain your original design, this is what I did for my vortex chamber. I have the same problem as yours and this is what I am going to do. The work will start next week.

1) IN ORDER TO PREVENT WATER & POOHS TO FLOW BACK, you should install a CHECK VALVE. This allows water to flow only one way, that is into the drum. But the problem with check valve is, the spring inside also restrict and therefore minimizes the volume of water flow.

2) Another alternative is to install the pipe from the pump outflow to a point higher than the water level of the drum. Do not connect the pipe from the pump and the drum together. This way, when the pump is off, only the water accumulated inside the pipe will return to the pond but it will immediately stop as soon as the water level goes down below the mouth of the pipe. What we are trying to achieve here is to prevent the poohs that had settled to the bottom of the drum to return to the pond.

3) Also please that note the in such system, the intake should always be positioned at a lower level of the filter and the outflow should always be positioned at the highest level. This is done with the assumption that the dirt and the poohs are usually heavier than water so they tend to settle down at the bottom... and the water on the surface that returns to the pond are the clean portion.

Hope this help.
