Protein skimmer Can't Post

Hello everyone,

Many years ago, a fish dealer introduced the concept of installing a protein skimmer for the KOI pond which I need not have a chance to see it in action.

Recently, Cheras Aquarium showed me a protein skimmer which can be easily installed.

I would appreciate that any koi keeper who have installed a protein skimmer or have experience on protein skimmer to post their message here .

Thanks

Hi,
Regarding the protein skimmer that is in Cheras Aquarium,The idea is to use Air that deliver from the water flow to materialise the protein into foam then slowly drip to the discharge pipe.
The advantage of this system is the recycle of the water usage as only the foam greated by the air are discharge but the water will flow back to the pond.
The disadvantage is that the skimmer that is available in the market is too small(as in capacity) & very costly.
The catalogue is available in Cheras Aquarium ,ask from Mr Yap,if not i can fax to you.
As for me,i use a different system.I apply the top water overflow to take off the toxic
from the surface of the pond. This is very cheap compare to the above mentioned but it uses A LOT OF WATER.
You can view my pond construction page under member's pond.

Large size protein skimmers are available.

We have used them in prawn hatcheries, removing large amount of insoluble organics(some even toxic) from seawater. We use ozone to breakdown most of the organics and ammonia.

Dear SpoonKii,

Sorry, I do not have any prawn hatchery, neither am I in prawn hatchery business. Therefore, I am unable to arrange for a visit unless I get permission from the hatchery owners.

My company has supplied about several systems to Setiawan, Sg Petani and Tawau. The systems have been running successfully and we continue to receive orders from the same customers when they build new or buy over unsuccessful hatcheries.

Since this is a site on Koi, maybe it will be better for us to discuss prawn hatchery water treatment seperately before we bore others with this very specific topic of prawn hatchery. Send me a mail. However, it is nice to note that the water quality for prawn hatchery is way more critical and sensitive than in Koi pond.

I notice that my pond is beginning to build up white foam along the side walls. Are these the proteins that is discussed? Are they harmful; they are certainly unattractive. How do I remove them?

Hi,the white foam present can be due to several factor such as over stocking, filter not running well and so on.Anyhow the foam is not good for the koi properly there is a high level of nitrate produced by koi waste and urine,it will bring diseases to koi.To get rid of it ,to my best knowledge it van be done (1)Turbo filter-it will depend on your pond size to get the right size filter(2)Bio-Ball to incorporate into your filter system.(3)To install a top water overflow to skim all the foam or other like leaf away.

Hi Ngtpeng
Could you provide alittle more detail about your pond -
1. Do you use coral shell?
2. Age of your pond and filter?
3. Type of filter system?
4. Water parameters - pH, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?

Thanks in advance.

Yes.

It's about 2 months old. The water is pumped up from the bottom of the tank and flow out as a ater fall through stacks of bio filter and corals.

I have not tested. I only eight seven inches koi in a 3m x3m x 1.6m deep pond.

I notice the small groups of foam formed after putting in Pandan and yam plants (a small amount though).

A newly setup pond/filter with coral shells will produce lots of foams for the initial period. Try replacing the coral shells with others and make major water changes. This should fix the problem.

Also, your pH should reads betw 7 to 8 otherwise my conclusion is not correct.

I read about ionizer.... almost same thing as a protein skimmer...it use Ozone to eliminate nitrite and nitrate...I'm not very sure about it..... Mark, do you know about this system?? Thanks

Ozone is not Protein skimmer.

Ozone is an oxygen molecule in an electrically charged state known as O3. The highly reactive O3 gas oxidizes organic waste products in the pond. Many times Ozone are recommended for large ponds to help control algae and improves water clarity. In some older ponds the accumulated dissolved organic carbons that caused the pond water to becomes alittle yellow color can be removed by Ozone.

Hope this is informative for all.
