Questions from A New Koi Keeper Can't Post

I have just bought a house with a koi pond. This weekend, I got someone to help with the cleaning of the pond, and he suggested the following:-
a) Purchase a UV light to clear fungus growth. Is this necessary? Is RM350 cheap?

b) My pump seems to work in that the waterfall is working fine. However, he says that it is not fully operational because the drain hole is not draining. I am confused. How is the drain connected to the pump?

Thanks for your help!

Alex

Hi,

Please check if there is any draining hole at the bottom of the pond that lead the pond water to a filter.

You should be concern on whether there is a proper water filter for the main pond. Forget about UV light at this stage as UV will not take care of the pond water if the filter is no good.

Check your filter and post the finding again so that others will be able to advice you further.

Questions from A New Koi Keeper [In reply to] Can't Post

There is a drain at the bottom of the pond, but when we removed the water on Sunday, it did not drain out from them despite the pump being switched on. We had to remove the water using pails. Is the drain stuck? If so, why is my waterfall still working when I switch on the pump? Could it be that the water is being pumped into the filter through the skimmer which is near the surface of the water? I am concerned if I should spend the money to buy a new pump since logically this does not help with a clogged drain right?

Thanks!

In normal pond design, the bottom drain will lead the water to a filter and in the last chamber of the filter, there will be a pump to pump the water back to the pond directly or via the water fall.
