Rate of water turnover? Can't Post

After a VERY long hiatus on this forum I've finally moved into a house where I can create a nice large pond!

Now then, cost is quite an important thing to me, so I was wondering what you all felt I should do regarding the pump I should use.

The pond will be about 5000 litres, bottom drain, with a large filter. I'm also not planning on stocking the pond heavily (in the short term at least) and there will most likely be one koi with four small goldfish for now. I currently have a pump that will do 900 litres an hour ( at an economical 10 watts!) It seems likely that turnover every 5 hours will be inadequate. I dont really fancy stumping out $$$ for a pump that can do 3000Lph, but I though maybe I could buy a 1800L pump and use the two together? Combined they will turn the pond over once every two hours, using only 25 watts. I thought this would be good for slow filtration. With two pumps, the larger one can be switched off at night as well.

Does that sound like it'll work out ok?

And also, I've looked at any number of pond liner calculators on the internet, but could someone here help me out?

The pond is 2.7m x 1.8m, with a 20cm deep and 20cm wide shelf all around the outside. What size liner will I need? I've had results from 5x4m to 6x5m!

Well.. I think the pond is built to be enjoyed everyday... regardless of big pump or small pump as long as it can clean the water and maintain the parameter correctly, you will enjoy it.. the minimum recommended water rotation is 2 x per hour and the more the better.Cool

Best regards

hello, there.
humm, a pond dont have to be costly. why build a big pond, when you can build a small one. big pond will cost you, big time. 5000-litres for 5 fishes, is a lot. with 5 fishes even with that 1 koi, a 1000litres one will be alright. buying 2 x 1800litres got its bad and good. the good is if one pump fails, the other one will back it up until you buy a new one. the bad things 2x1800 litres is more costly since cost is your concern. why, here is an example on the pump im using the highest spec a 14,000ltrs/hr pump uses 250watts. going to the lowest spec of which pushes 9,000ltrs/hr uses 150watts. getting 2 of the 9,000ltrs/hr pump will total up to 300 watts. so going for a 14,000 ltrs/hr pump is a good move.

you should worry so much about pump cost, it all in the start-up capital. but according to your story, you are just in the process of building one. in this modern days, pumps are more economical & efficient. they rarely break down. even if they do, they are spare parts readily available.

before you go into construction, what do you want to keep gold fish only, koi only? goldfish can live in a relatively small pond, but for koi they require a lots of space. i also wonder why do koi need lots of space. after a year, a 5 inch koi, grows up to a 12-incher wiggling in a small pond. if you want to have a pond which last for a long long time. i suggest you fufill the basic requirement of koi/goldfish keeping. or else you'll have a poor quality, green pea soup, foul smelling pond with unhealthy fish which will not live long. OR you'll get a overgrown koi which will make you think that you should have build a bigger pond in the first place.

sorry, for the long say. just to let you know ok.
