Red Worms in Coral Shells Can't Post

There are so many red worms found in my bio-filter residing in the coral shells and fiter media. Are they harmful and must I remove them asap?

Hi "Red worm"

Coral is not a good filter midia, use synthetic fibre matting ,before you run in problems .

Shiro
Thanks again.
I use coral to build bio bateria. This is taught to me by a koi farmer in Singapore. My filter has 5 chambers. I use filter mets on the 2nd and 3rd chambers. Coral shells is placed on the 4th chambers.

Hi Mark,

Coral is bad for your filter, no doubt it is the most economical.

Many of us started the ponds also with coral and in the end, many get rid of the coral and use synthetic fibre matting instead.

I have just replaced my coral shell with bio-balls. Is this good enough? Very costly as I spent almost SGD100. For the comfort sake, its worth the money.

Hello Mark,

Pond with filter stuffed with coral is most of the time in alkaline condition. The moment the coral is removed, water may slowly turn acidic. So please check your pH regulary and if the pH drop well below 7.0, you must increase it by adding chemical.
