Remodelling my pond Can't Post

Dogged by major leaks and with much encouragement and the missus suggesting that I make it biggerWink I have sketched a layout for your comments. The depth is 5feet. and will be fiberglassed!

Hi HWONG,

Have you thought running separate filter system for each BD???Crazy. Looking at your drawing and if this is mine (unfortunately notPirate) I will run them separate for few reasons, if one pump failed other one will still run keeping water circulation and quality, also when cleaning the filters will be less muscles, IMHOSmile

rgds,
Jon

PS: Why are the BD's not located evenly in the pond???

Hi Hwong,

I agree with Jon. Better separate to 2 sets of filtration system. I think 2 sets of vortex will be great. My friend, 2p+, designed this for sometime ago. How you will understand it.

From the layout the length of the pond is approx. 9 meters. Extend a little bit you can make 2 sets of vortex. I think it is good in the future in term of maintenance (daily). From my experience, up-down flow has higher rate of debris accumulation than vortex. For each, chamber of the bio chamber, the moving bed media can be applied. Laugh

Note that the connection of the pipe in the vortex, do not use the glue.

The alternative media is JFM made to be like grid which can be no worry about clog. But moving bed is a lot easier to clean (since it is self cleaning).

For the pump feeding, because the recommended has 2 sets, therefore, you can use 2 pump. 1 pump for bekki shower. You can use submersible pump. I use Calpeda GM-10 (9 tons per hour around 250 watts) which can feed my around 3 meters bekki without any problem. The other one, I recommend Fok pump which only 100 watts for 18 tons per hour.

By using 2 sets of filtration system, it is very convinience for maintenance than your series original design.

One last thing, the depth should be 1.8-2 meters at the deepest (bottom drain).

Hope it can help,

Cheers,

Tao

Re: [HWONG] Remodelling my pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Tao, Jon, Thanks for the suggestions. I have put some thoughts into using vortex which are made of Fiberglass ( the ready made ones are too tall and my existing filters don’t have the depth to take them. Moreover, in this remodeling job, I am working with constraints.

There are actually 2 systems to my design. The Long filter to the right is my existing one and the first 2 chamber are leaking badly. I have to redo the piping but don’t want to do massive hacking, so I will run new pipes and raise the floor for the entire stretch. As you have rightly said, with conventional filters, the shit rest on the filter floor and are hard to flush out. This is the reason why it will mainly draw-in Mid level pond water; so there shud be little solid waste (I assume). The water from mid level will be put through the Biological filter 1 (on the right) I will consider moving bed of some kind but definitely there will be massive amount of aeration here. The water will be pumped using 2 units Tsurumi 12k liter/hr pumps back to the pond ( left to right)at 1 1/2 feet below the surface to create current.

Ok lets look at the 2nd filter. I will draw-in pond bottom water but at 1foot from the floor. A friend uses this method. Instead of a usual shallow dome that covers the bottom drain, a big flower pot will cover the bottom drain (with the usual 1"gap at the bottom to suck in shit and water.) The heavier shit will be sucked into the bottom drain and this is directly discharged into the drainage chamber #8 everyday. The stand-pipes for these 2 bottom drains will have a deliberate overflow. This constant movement of water will draw the solid waste into the pipes. When the stand pipes are pulled, it will have the bulk of the solid waste flushed out.

The water at the 1 foot height has little solid waste and this water goes to the 1st chamber #9 of the filter which is small and purely to trap waste. Water goes to the 2nd chamber through a 3 X 6inch pipes. A piece of Jap matt will cover these pipes to sieve whatever solids there is. The first chamber will be completely drained every 2 days. Chamber# 10 will just have some brushes and # 11 will have 2 X Tsurumi pumps to pump the water up the 2 Bakki showers.

So what do U think of my plans now?Crazy

Hi HWONG,

Can you build a vortex into your system since a ready made once is out of the question??? If you raise the floor that means you'll lose some height or are you planning to increase the height too??? I like the idea of mid water return but wouldn't be a big gamble to assume that you wouldn't get much waste on the pond floorUnimpressed

I will still draw water from your BD's and mid water pick up can be added to. This way just incase you change to more powerfull pump the pump will not starve due to better flow, IMHOSmile

The stand-pipes for these 2 bottom drains will have a deliberate overflow. This constant movement of water will draw the solid waste into the pipes. When the stand pipes are pulled, it will have the bulk of the solid waste flushed out.
Aren't you worried about sludge build up in the BD pipes. Mine feeds from BD to filters and flush everyday but once a month I still clean my BD pipe to clean the sludge build. You should see how much waste it builds up even with constant water flow thru BD pipeShockedWink

A static media in C #9 would be ideal and moving bed to the next. This will eliminate the Jmatt(sieve) and will be less maintenance. You don't have to worry about any jmatt getting block by waste build up. Do I make senseCrazyLaugh

Jon

Re: [HWONG] Remodelling my pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi HWong..

i have to agree with koi38 abt the BD stuffs.. i used to have the stand pipe for BD to be flush everyday.. i used to flushed twice a day and my pond floor never go 'clear'.. after i changed it following koi38's advice, changing my dry sump to pre filter, i draw water from BD then to BH, my pond floor more cleaner and algae grow more healthier..

IMHO, BD to prefilter then to BH = good water..Smile

just a suggestionSmile

Re: [HWONG] Remodelling my pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Hwong,

One other option with regards to your 2 bottom drains for your considerations.
Connect the 2 bottom drains to the Settlement chamber ( No. 9) and have another sets of by-pass pvc pipes connected from BD in Settlement Chamber ( No.9) to Dry Chamber ( No.8). With this method, the water from the bottom drains to the Settlement Chamber will be constantly moving (i.e. with the up-stand pvc pipes removed in the Settlement Chamber and up-stand pipes plug in at the Dry Chamber ) and water can also be discharge out to the Dry Chamber. But if you choose to directly discharged water out to the Dry Chamber, then plug in the up-stand pipes at the bottom drains outlets in the Settlement Chamber for water
by-pass to Dry Chamber (i.e.with up-stand pipes removed in Dry Chamber).
I hope I am making sense here.

Best Regards,
ThiamHwa

Oh, one other item for you to consider as well. If you are having 2 trays of Bakki Showers, why not placed each of them at either end of the pond so that the returning water to the 28'0" length pond are better distributed ?

This is a very good time to renovate or remodel your filtration system. "Do it once but do it right"

Pls. reconsider.

Sigh, After many months of delays, my pond is finally completed. I recommissioned the pond last week and water is now as green as wheat grass juice! I am posting a night view of the pond. Will talk about the details later.
Cheers
