Re: [qt4eva] Shallow Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

What I did was, after cleaning the pond I fill up with water and setup the skippy filtration system, one in my filtration chamber and another one is in my waterfall box. Run the pump accordingly for 1 week. Then I drained the water completely and fill up again (took me 8hrs to fill up). This time my daughter (9yrs) enjoy swimming with her friends in the pond for half a day as what she requested but on the other hands perhaps it neutralise the chlorine.

After that I keep the pump running on the 2nd day. On 3rd day I put some river fishes (Talapiah) to test and perhaps to produce ammonia (just my theory) and begins the nitrite process. 4th day I put in 6 kois (6" in size) and poured in 10kg salt and add in 10 kg corals in the last chamber. Early morning of 5th day I poured in 1 lit bacteria growth in the pond and to monitor this until this weekends.

So far so good, the PH is 7.5 (measured by drops colour) and the water is clean and clear. The 6 kois are very active running around the pond but always hiding under the waterfall box scared of owl. Mad

I intend to add in some bigger kois this weekend if everything are ok, however I am expecting the algae will grow and to see whether my filtration system can overcome it, alse I will have to add an external TT and spend money on bioballs.Cool

Best regards
Abangk

Hi Abangk

As for the existence of owl which is threatening your kois, perhaps you should install the automatic Motion Sensor Light. It's a powerful spotlight which comes on automatically when a person or object is within it's sensing range. I had one fitted over my pond for security purpose. It's made by PDL electrical - there are other brands also.
For the length of your pond you could maybe fit 2-3 units. Hope this can take care of the Owl problem as they don't like bright lights!

Regards.

That is a great idea.. never thought of that although I have one which is not working already as it is very sensitive to lightning. Will try to put one and see whether it works on owl or not. Crazy

Re: [Abangk] Shallow Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

hello, sory been very buzy lately...

about those owls, owls dont eat fish. so no worries there.. and the depth of your pond will make the owl think twice of scooping out your fish... the worry thing is the fishes hiding. i see unsufficient oxygen, thats why they are always hiding under the waterfall, oxygen exchange is the most under there... have you put any air stones or air venturies in the pond??

the new pond syndrome will occure in 4 weeks.. since your pond is big, and your fishes are still a small community. i think you wont encounter them unless you overstock your pond. but if you still want to see green water.. and i recommend it, as to start the nitrogen balance and to kick start the skippy. i suggest you over feed your fish. and just leave the left over food. but word of caution is to monitor your water parameters.. dont add more fishes now, i read you want to add more fishes in there... just leave it for a month for the filter to mature then add more fish..

nice work...

Hello.. brother... nice to hear from you again..
I thought you are already tired answering my questions.. Cool

Ok latest status:

You are very right about the owl that cannot scoop out my koi but not quite right on "owls don't eat fish" as that fellow already wallop so many fish around my area.. some more so brave.. it stand on my railing aiming for my kois and stared at me until I came closer.Mad

My skippys are working very-very well I guess.. Thank You for your recommendation!!.. as until now my pond water is still clear and clean. I have put in all together 18 kois in my pond now for 2 weeks already 6pcs 30cm and 12pcs 14-16cm just an average kois that cost me almost 2k. My pond now is already almost a month old.

Problems:
The PH looks good @ 7.5 however I bought the Nitrite (NO2) testing liquid, 5 drops each of 2 bottles region 1 & 2 in 5ml water and I got a very high reading all the time. Change half pond water, add in 20kg salts and put in the Enzyme Bacteria booster yet the reading is still high Unsure. However all my kois look healthy and active as usual but worry of acidic water may kill them soon..

I put in some water plants together with the polly bag in the pond, could that be the caused of high Nitrite?..

Best regards
Abangk

Re: [Abangk] Shallow Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

hehe.. no, im not tired of answering pond questions, well we are here to help, one way or another..

seems like your owls like fish for its diet. hehhee.. i do have that animal problems when i had my pond running. worse, these are the local heron (bangau) white color birds, long legs and pointed beaks.. solving the problem is using my trusty old super soaker. (had them since i was a kid) dont want to hurt them 'bangau', just scare them.. and strong yet safe gush of jetting water seems to scare them in a safer way, rather than using BB guns or slingshot etc. they always come in the afternoon at 12pm-1pm. i'll just stalk them during these time, after a whole 3-days i dont see them stalking the pond anymore, until now..Sly hope you can solve the owl problem, the motion detector thing seems like a good investment like-wise..

great you like the skippy.. you wont regret it. now, my calculation, your 18-kois comes up to 360cm all together. that is 141.7 inch of fish. based on your pond size of 30' x 5' x 2' = about 8494-litres. your surface area is about 150'square. your ideal stock is 114-inches of fish, max is at 147-inches. as you can see, you almost overstock you pond. your nitrite says it. your ammonia-eating bacteria is coping up with the amount of ammonia produce by your fish. but your nitrite-eating bacteria is still establishing itself. stop stocking up your pond, i know its tempting & you feel your pond looks empty...

i didnt quite see your pump specs, and new skippy filter dimensions from the waterfall. did you get the pump i recommend? get the trickle filter running, as you got that planned already. as it'll cope with your nearly overstock pond. and get airstones running in-there.. well, it can help the 'owl' problem by making the owl not see the fishes clearly.

about the test-kits, are they not expired or you did the testing wrongly?? maybe you ask some pond member to test your water parameters & compare together, you might see a differect testing technique etc. why you putting salt in your pond? salt are ONLY to be added in-case of emergency illness or first sign of illness. stop doing it. adding salt when your fish are healthy, would harm them instead of good. what salt does to kois/goldfish is to activate the mucus membrane to produce more slime. slime is good, as a protective defence layer for the fish (useful when parasite/bacteria are just starting to attack the fish, the mucus will protect the fish from the parasite/bacteria. the parasite/bacteria attack the fish because it got a low immune system, so now when it's healthy and you add salt, the mucus membrane will produce more slime. Incase your fish are ill, it will produce more mucus, but the fish has already producing additional mucus, which then stresses the mucus membrane.. stress fish is sick fish + attack by illness = very sick fish.. sorry for long explaination but you get me?) are you using anti-chlorine to top-up or condition your water?? another way of promoting protective layer to fishes without triggering its mucus membrane is using aloe-vera. im using interpet safe-start. its the most economical $/ml. it's an anti-chlorine and got aloe-vera in it. well, you can shop around and see which brand is cheaper at your area, as long as it got aloe vera in it. my pond is about 1200 litres. and i remove about 240-ltrs (1/5 of my pond volume) every 2 weeks or so. i just place in 25ml of safe-start. a 1000ml bottle would last me for about 3-mths.

as long as your kois are eating & active.. that will be alright. No, fish alone at the corner etc? water plants dont contribute to high nitrite. remember the water cycle, i told you at another post long ago??

nice to see your pond, all up and running... very nice, set-up. (thinking of building a same concept, once i get my own house). keeping post them pictures...

Walaweh... I got this heron (bangau) too.. standing stoned in my pond, don't want to fly.. its real stone he..he..Sly

Wow.. this is very special and technical info, I thought only when I am in my Peugeot Club got this kind of calculation... "18-kois comes up to 360cm all together. that is 141.7 inch of fish. based on your pond size of 30' x 5' x 2' = about 8494-litres. your surface area is about 150'square. your ideal stock is 114-inches of fish, max is at 147-inches."

- "i know its tempting & you feel your pond looks empty... " * Ha.. ha.. you got me.... I thought of adding more small one so as to tame them from young just like yours...

- i didnt quite see your pump specs, * 13,000 lit/hr @ 130w consumption.

- and new skippy filter dimensions from the waterfall * 2' x 2' x 2'.

- did you get the pump i recommend?: * I think the one that I got is sufficient. Low consumption and high output.

- and get airstones running in-there.. * Yes I bought one AC/DC pump cost RM200. One line to my main Skippy and another one into the pond splitted into two outlets.

- well, it can help the 'owl' problem by making the owl not see the fishes clearly. * I think they give up already.. Tongue

- about the test-kits, ** I will bring some pond water in the test tube to the shop where I bought it and ask them to test it for me.

- why you putting salt in your pond? ** Thought of reducing the Nitrite reading.. Crazy Thanks for the advice.. will stop that.

- are you using anti-chlorine to top-up or condition your water?? ** Yes.. the cheap one.. RM4.50 per 2lit bottle. Will check whether with Aloe-vera.

- i remove about 240-ltrs (1/5 of my pond volume) every 2 weeks or so. ** I have to top up 1/2 inch per 24hrs as I think there is a leakage on my pond.

- as long as your kois are eating & active.. that will be alright. No, fish alone at the corner etc? ** Not alone at the corner but all of them are always running on the floor of the pond hardly come up and eat very little.

- water plants dont contribute to high nitrite. ** Yes not the plants but could be the existing fertiliser in the soil.

- nice to see your pond, all up and running... very nice, set-up. (thinking of building a same concept, once i get my own house). ** Thank You Very Much for that and your great advices..

- keeping post them pictures... ** Yes I will.. soon..

ONE MORE QUESTION.. 1hr heavy rain will increased 1inch of my water pond (about 300lit), should I put gutter on my roof? It will cost me additional RM500 for the gutter.Pirate

Re: [Abangk] Shallow Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

heehehe.. well, i love calculating. actually, out of boredem. i have an excel spreadsheet with formulas on calculating flow and efficiency using different pipe sizes. and also the ideal and max stock level of fishes hehee..

based upon the pump, filter , pipe size & length you are probably running lesser than 1.5 the turn-over rate. no harm there, actually. but i recommend running a second supplementary filter, just to be safe.

just hang about around the pond everyday. 3 x a day. play with the water, the koi will get biasa and wont see you as an intruder. my kois are too friendly to everyone, coming up and sucking ppl hands. which i think is a bit scary too.. humm. (too friendly also no good, but my kois are spoilt already.. Tongue)

so the owl lost.. hehee.. a problem solve, yeah!!

where is that leak?? i found my leak at the outlet of my skippy filter. the water was sliding away to the outside of the pond. a few silicon to re-route it, fix my leak problem. 1/2 inch in 24 hours is 6-7 litres lost in 1 hour. i wont say, water loss through evaporation. or you can place a toilet floater & make it to a DIY water top-up. i'll place a pic of my DIY water auto top-up.

your kois sound, ok. as long ada running ok. if slow swimming koi, pls investigate. another trick on taming, i use before, is to use feeding rings. (just use the air hose and buy the connector and adjust to the ring size you want, it will float) you fix the ring to a permenent location & place the food in the ring. they will look for food in the ring, when they are tame enough, you can remove the rings. currently, im training my guppies with the ring.. hehee..

does your pond got an overflow outlet? get the overflow outlet bigger, in my case, i got a hammer and a long, large nail and slowly cip the 3/4 hole. i enlarge my overflow pipe from 3/4 inch to a wooping 2-inch.. no more overflow pond.. hope that helps.

Ok.. at home no problem..Crazy

I got good news... now my pond water is great with the matuarity of my 2 Skippy Systems. The PH is remains at 7.5 and the latest test on the Nitrite was 0.5 instead of 5.0 last week and hope to drop to 0.0 soon and the water is crystal clear.

Its a really great low cost systems, I still remember the comment by the founder of this Skippy system stated that ''We have tried all the other things and have found them all to fail. Lava rocks because they clog quickly and are good for about ½ of a season even if you clean them, (which by the way kills off the bacteria colony). Brushes do not hold or trap nearly as much. Bio-balls are a joke along with furnace filters, foam rubber, carpet padding, sponges etc.''

Also very lucky that my one way water flow system is working very well as the fishes are helping to sweep all the debris while the movement of the water pushing it into the settlement chamber, my pond floor is always clean...Cool

My kois are getting friendly now as they came near me for food already.. I can see them all enjoying the food with less fear and sometime even dare bitting my fingers..Sly perhaps the evil owls have no longer scaring them ..

Best regards
Abangk

Hi all

I wish to express my gratitude to all Sifus here for the advices, guides and the effort & time to draw the diagram for me to ensure that I will not stuck into the common mistakes in constructing my lovely Koi Ponds... Big Thanks to you all.

Although it was a bit late getting into this great Forum, I managed to construct the rest of the pond closed to the recommended spec and requirements.

Now my pond is already 2 months old, the water is crystal clear ever since the initial top up till now. I really surprised that I did not getting the new pond symptom of green water, thanks to Eddie244 for introducing the Skippy filtration system. The water parameters are good with 7.5 PH and 0.0 Ammonia & Nitrite, the pond floor is always clean although without bottom drain and my 18 Kois are very active and eat very well twice a day, morning and evening.

Last weekend I inspected the settlement chamber and scooped a mug full of debris out manually as there is no bottom drainage nor dry chamber but the debris was very well cumulated in the chamber.

The Skippy Filtration system alone works very well for my pond and no cleaning has been done so far as there is no signed of requirement to do so.

I have problem with my digital camera and will post the latest pictures of my pond and Kois very soon... Cool

Best regards
Abangk

Glad to heard the good news Abangk, I guess you didn't get the green water because your pond is in shady area which doesn't get much sunlight. Mine is doing well too. I got mine filled about 3 weeks after yours, mine turned green last month (probably because mine is in full sunlight exposer) but this month it starting to get clear up. I can see all my kois and the bottom floor now :) so glad that filter hold up for me. Hopefully it will still do the job in the long run. Can't wait for your pictures.

Not really as 2/3 of my pond exposed to rain and sunlight from noon til evening. Glad to hear that your pond water is clear now.. we shall enjoy and focus on growing our kois. I was just lucky when trying my luck on Skippy... but was prepared to face the green as it is a common problem for beginners. Cool

Ha.. ha.. without the guppy ponds, my children will say that Im crasy spanding so much on kois but hardly spanding them on "Ikan Bakar".... Wink

I just bought 6 more small kois about 8cm @RM25 each and now I got 23 kois. 6 x 40cm, 11 x 18cm, 6 x 8cm.

Instead of Black Moor I got in the same pond:
- 20 medium size Lobsters,
- 150 Tiger bums,
- 4 small white Kaluis,
- 10 small Red "Lampam",
- a 20cm PN Turtle,
- a purple Crab
- 2 "Bandaraya"

So far all of them are happy together but will watchout on the PN Turtle to ensure not disturbing others especially my kois otherwise.. bye..bye..Sly

Hello Thiam,

I would appreciate if you could advise me as I have similar constraints as AbangK. However I have not started constructing it yet.

The size of the pond would be 20ftx5ftx1.5ft (depth). The pond will be at ground level, as I cannot dig the ground due to a main-drainage directly underneath it. The 1.5ft height (raised above the ground), levels with my house floor. Proposed size for filter system is 5ftx5ft. The 20ft length is excluding filter system. The proposed waterfall is at the center of the pond - 8ft wall.

Would you be able to propose a design for me?

Thanks.
Francis
