Re: [Epal63] Shallow Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Epal63

(1) You don't seem to have a dry chamber. Is this true and how to get around without it?

* Yes I don't have enough space to have the dry chamber. Dry chamber is to simplify the suction process of the debris for the down piping system via gravity. Needs sufficient compartment to ensure sufficient amount of water to vacuum the settled debris into this empty chamber. Once the debris form a particular piping been vacuumed into the chamber, then close the pipe line and drain off the dirty water with debris accordingly until the chamber dry again for vacuuming the next pipe lines.

* For my "one way water flow system" (Recommended for small pond only) all the debris carried away into the settlement chamber automatically by the water flow. I can use a pump to vacuum off the collected debris from the settlement chamber else manually scoop off, perhaps 3-6 months once job.

(2) You mentioned a "cheapest BH" - Skippy system. Could you elaborate more on this and where I can get them?

* Well cheapest means I just need 4 cartons of kitchen scrub pads instead of 5,000 pieces of bio balls for the Skippy system. However other than that are the same such as water pump, bubble pumps, jap mat, brushes etc. I bought the scrub pads from the factory at Puchong behind the Rakan Muda Complex.

Dear Abangk,

noted you have an excellent pond with crsytal clear water. I am new to this forum and also new to fish rearing, in fact i have never reared any fish before. I intend to build a small garden pond to rear koi (may be 5 or 6 koi only). my intended pond size is 9'x7'x(1.5' to 2' depth) including area for filter and pump chamber, open air. Being a firt timer, i intend to keep the cost low. My contractor is just an ordinary house contrator who knows nothing abut pond design and construction. would you care to share your entire design and drawing for the pond with and your expertise?

if you care to email to me your design drawing to : sitcom33@yahoo.com

By the way where is your house? i am from KL.

Thanks and wamest regards,

sitcom

Hi Sitcom

I am not the expert, Initially was just like you 0 based and all the sifu on this forum help me out right on time. You can browse thru my history from the top.

I do not have any drawing myself but there was one nice drawing of my pond provided by our sifu Thiamhwa on the first page.

If you wish you are most welcome to my house to get better idea. What I can advise you are:

1. Bacteria house must be done correctly.
2. Water recycle must be sufficient.
3. Correcy Water flow, perhaps check with your fengsui...
4. Having bottom piping system is highly recommended for big deep pond but for small shallow pond, with the proper water flow system will do. Cool

abangK, i'm quite interested with your skippys performance- looking at your water condition. How would you rate this filter... easy, hard or no cleaning at all? how to maintain its performance?

pls help, i'm considering a filter system for my new 14x10x3ft pond... i've to admit that i'm too bz to do frequent maintainance :)

Hi Scinomore...
Well My Skippy was done 80% to recommended system as the 20% is where the bottom piping, which was not done.

To rate it, I would say it is the best, cheap, effective and almost free maintenance Water Treatment System. Thanks to all Sifu here..

It works perfect for my pond and it already almost a year no cleaning done. I am looking for my right time now to do the cleaning.

1. I will stop the pump but not the air pump.
2. Block all the water passages to the chambers.
3. Clean the brushes, mats and scrub pads with the pond water.
4. I will use my spare pump to vacuum the debris and dirty water out as there are no bottom piping and dry chamber. (However I still have to use a pump, even though there is a dry chamber as the water level is higher than my pond base).
5. Clean the chambers with pond water and set back the system accordingly.
6. Top up the pond water with proper antichlorine.
7. Pour 10kg salt.
DONE.

Sifu.. it that the correct procedure?... please comment..

Best regards
Abangk

You are very right about the owl that cannot scoop out my koi but not quite right on "owls don't eat fish" as that fellow already wallop so many fish around my area.. some more so brave.. it stand on my railing aiming for my kois and stared at me until I came closer.Mad

Hi,

I am facing a similar situation. Mine is not Owls. Not sure of the name but it has long beak with blue color features. It attacked my pond on day time - right infront of my eyes! Mad It dropped from the sky like rocket. Luckily no koi was lost....maybe guppies.

Not sure if any sifu has any recommendation to get rid of birds-attack.

Thanks.

Epal63.. King Fisher... we called it "Burung Raja Udang"..

Dear friends and Sifus...

First time cleaning my filter yesterday 4/5/08 after ngam-ngam ONE year... May 07 to May 08...
"Happy Birthday to my Pond".

Took me 2.5 hours to clean loads of dirty green scrub pads, brushes, Jap mats and scooping a pail full of debris "Tahi Ikan" (Good fertiliser).

Just to share...
1. Switched off the pump.
2. Block the inlet hole to the Settlement Chamber
3. Clean the brushes with the available water in the chamber
4. Clean the pads bit by bit and place them out first
5. Clean the Jap mat & place them out side.
Next:
6. Used my main pump to suck out the water from all chambers
7. Scooped the thick debris off the chambers floor
8. Clean the chambers with the pond water
9. Put back all the brushes, Jap mats and scrub pads into the chambers
10. Slowly released the water from the pond to max
11. Top up tap water into the pond + Antichlorine
12. Run the pump as usual
The Next Day:
All back to normal with happy kois and Chrystal clear water... Cool

Best regards

Hi..

Just to share that Arowana fish looks very nice in the pond. I bought 2 Silver Arowanas about 6" long and I like to see the way it moves in the pond which is more inreresting than watching it from the side in the aquarium. Cool

AbangK, just a word of caution, arowana feed on fishes though some do surprisingly feed on fish paste/ pellets. But when they get hungry, first, they will go for your guppies, if to no avail, i think they will eye on your koi, of course starts with the smaller koi onwards....

Yah.. I knew that.. it eats both small food fish and pallet too but, my guppys are in a saperate pond. Actually I am happy to see that it eats pallet so it can for sure survive in the pond. I do have a few other fishes that eat small fish meant for food in my pond too.. small fish is expensive, I suppled small fish to my pond once a week..

Re: [Abangk] Shallow Pond [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there,

Hope I am not too late to join u guys about the waterproofing coatings. I do not recommend using bitumen coatings at all as it tends to degrade after sometime, it becomes brittle and might cause u some headache later on. It is normally water-based type, which might be re-emulsified if used as pond lining.
There are many types of flexible cementitious coating in the market, which are meant for potable water use (safe for human consumption, normally used in our concrete water tank). If used onto a new concrete pond as a pond lining, u do not even have to neutralise the high akalinity caused by the concrete. U can add in the fishes after a few days when the chlorine has fully evaporated, off course it gotta be aerated. So check out for this coatings..
I am a koi hobbyist, and have been in the construction chemical trade (waterproofing industry) for some time now. I applied these 2-component coating onto my 16 tonne pond, which the depth is slightly more than 5'. It surely able to withstand the hydrostatic pressure, no problem at all.
A good waterproofing job is all about its surface preparation. Water jetting the surface is recommended for it to bond properly, or it might have a chance to peel off later. Good luck!

Regards.

Hi chriswu3311...

Well this is the benefit of making new friends in similar interest before we begin to venture into it.. it was my dream to have pond at my valcony when I was intended to by my first house, unfortunately at that time I can only effort to buy a flat but still managed to make a small pond at the corner of the balcony. Just a small pond but hell of problems to clean it almost every month.

When I built my present house, I dare not to build the bigger pond but continue with a medium size plastic sheet pond until last year (after 8 yr stay) when I accidently hit into this great forum and learn a lot on how to build a proper and less maintenance of pond water treatment... Wink

Best regards
Abangk
