Soliciting advice for my dream pond, kindly check it out Can't Post

Hi All,

I could really use some advice regarding my future pond. I already have a small existing pond that I plan to knock down. The design is rather simple. Square shape pond with a traditional filtration system. All the edges will be rounded off so there won't be any sharp corners. Brushes for mechanical filtration and Jap mats for the bio filtration. There will be an air pump and the jap mats will be aerated.

If y'all can just look it over incase I missed something critical. But more or less that’s how it’s going to look.

Here’s an overview of my planned dream pond. A very ambitious venture.

As you can see, it’s above ground. Its going to have a glass window (16” x 50”) made out of ¾” tempered glass. Similar to ponds found in the UK. I think it’s pretty cool. I really like this. I can admire my koi both from above and from the side. Also, I think it’ll help me to easily spot parasites, any koi getting sick, ulcers etc. There’s already existing water falls rockwork from my previous pond, so I plan to use that too, but I’ll need to rework it so that it won’t spill out. This is the second way the water will return to the pond, by slow trickling. The first is via a mid water return pipe.

11 feet long by 7 feet wide by 6 feet deep
3,430 gallons (12,984 liters) Not including the filtration system. The filtration system is over 1000 gallons. Has a bottom drain and surface skimmer that lead to a vortex chamber. Also the bottom drain will have an EPDM air diffuser disc on top to provide more aeration in the pond and create a mushroom like effect of pushing the water up and helping to move all the debris towards the bottom drain.

My filtration system. Over 1000 gallons. Bottom drain pipes and transfer pipes are 4” in diameter. Purging pipes and water return are 2”
First chamber – Vortex , second – brushes for mechanical filtration to catch the bigger particles. Third and fourth are going to be bio chambers filled with Japanese Mats and heavily aerated from the bottom.
For the fifth chamber, I’m not sure yet, probably another smaller bio chamber with jap mats. But this chamber will mainly ensure that the pump won’t run out of water as the water line in this chamber will be lower because of the pump.
The next chamber is of course where the pump and air pump will be located.

My water pump: Sequence 5800SEQ23
SIZE : 1/3 H.P.
HEAD : 23" MAX HEAD
FLOW : 4600 USgph @ 11"
DRAW : 333 WATTS
Suction / Discharge : 1.5" FNPT / 1.5" FNPT
The last is the discharge chamber where I can purge the other chambers of all the accumulated waste at the bottom by opening ball valves. On second thought, I probably will be using Valterra slide valves instead.

The water will be pumped back to the pump via two ways. Mainly through mid water return pipe, and a second pipe going up and to my trickle water falls. A ball valve near the T junction is what I plan to control the flow. This is what I’m worried about. I’m not sure if my pump can push the water up 6 feet to my water falls. Although I think it’s a pretty powerful pump. Anybody have experience with this?

Any advice and comment would really be appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from y’all. Thanks!

Hi kennethc,

I think you may want to consider having some ventilation blocks/louvers windows to the side wall of
your water and air pump compartment to allow the hot air to escape out. If not it may result in short
circuit to the pump units. Thank you.

Best Regards,

Hello, about Jap mat, I have found that as far as it being used to cultivate a bacteria colony, it offers very little surface area for the colony, it also tends to break down , little pieces start to come apart, I use it as kinda a pre-filter material, and you will see, that it gets clogged fast with crap from the pond, so this too would also suffocate the good bacteria, so just use it to catch crap, what I have found with bio balls, is the are great, BUT!! they too get clogged in time, and are expensive, so in my never ending search, I found what I think to be an EXELENT bio material, I dont even know the name, but it is the hard plastic ribbon that is used to go around boxes before they are shipped to stores! This ribbon has a rough surface( great for the bacteria) and is very cheap, you must buy a roll, which is around $60.00 but this will easily fill four( 4) barril filter, I mean trickle towers!!! The only bad thing is the time, you have to tie the ribbon in knots!!! And this is time consuming, but it houses alot of bacteria, and does not get clogged!!! It is light wieght!!! so check this out! It works!!!!

Hi Kenneth,

From you very nice detailed drawings, here are my thoughts.
1. You should bench the floor towards the BD.
2. You should have at least 2 tpr on either end of the pond to create water movement circulation. This will aid the waste to move towards to BD.
...........and the rest goes like belowTongue

Thanks a lot jon for the comments. I'll post a redesign of the filtration soon.

A friend advised me that my 4600 gph pump is too powerful that I'll need at least two bottom drains and double all the piping in the filtration system to avoid starving the system. What do you think?

I'm thinking of incorporating a trickle box (same as a trickle tower except it runs horizontally) into the design and connecting the output of my pump to it. However if I do that, I won't have a TPR anymore. The water will return via a sheer waterfall probably. Maybe I should get a second pump to run the trickle box...

What do you guys think?

Your friend was right. A 100mm pipe can take a max of 15k flow. So having 2 x 100mm BD and 2 x 100mm transfer pipe is the the way to go. BUT, if this is my pond I'd rather use separate filtration system per BD. This way you can maintain alternatively. But to do this means you need a pump per systemTongue

Use 2 pumps instead. If one brakes down you still have the other one to circulate the waterWink.

Re: [Koi38] Soliciting advice for my dream pond, kindly check it out [In reply to] Can't Post

Happy New Year to all.

Here's an update to my filtration. I've decided to add a DIY vortex microscreen to the settlement chamber to handle all the mechanical filtration and jap matts for the next 3 chambers.

Jon, if you notice the bottom drain pipe going to the vortex chamber, I just realized that if ever, I can never drain the water in my pond completely. Because of the depth and placement of the pipe going into the vortex, at best it'll drain leaving at least 45% of the pond water before leveling off. The obvious advantage of this is its a safeguard, incase of an accident or leak, my koi will always have water. However, I don't know if there are any disadvantages of this. If ever I want to drain my pond completely, I can use a drainage pump. What do you think?

Now my biggest concern now. Because of the 4600 gph pump, my fear is that its too powerful and I might starve my filtration system of water. Assuming I have a 4" bottom drain pipe and 4" skimmer leading into the vortex chamber, and that I've double all transfer pipes in between chambers (two 4" pipes). The bottleneck however is the single pipe in the vortex chamber leading to the second chamber. Since I want to use a VMS, do you think this will affect the flow rate badly? I've read that a single 4" pipe can do only 3600 gph flow rate. However, I think the length of the pipe needs to be taken into account also...which is only about 37" in length. what do you think? This is actually my biggest problem now. Perhaps I should double the piping somehow...?

Also the diameter of the vortex chamber is 50" Do you think this is too big? Maybe I should make it smaller?

Looking forward to your comments. Thanks.

first I think ahtan40 is a problem for the forum.

as for the design, I dont know much about filters, but the look of the pond itself is very cool..I like it.

it seems that if it turns out to look like your design that it will be a nice pond to sit by and view the fish.
