Suspended Solids Question Can't Post

From my own experience and from reading the post on several web boards, it looks to me like biofiltration has been pretty well covered. There is more than one way of getting the job done, many are somewhat dependant upon the local water and weather conditions.

One thing that is common to all biofilter systems is that the biofilter works best when it is not asked to perform double duty as a mechanical filter, as well. In fact, some of the most efficient biofilters will not do anything to remove solids from the water and must be supplied with water that is relatively free of suspended organic matter.

I would like to hear from anyone who has an idea that they have tried and that works, for a pre-filter who's job is solely that of solids removal. Ideally, it would be something that the DYI (Do It Yourself) pond keeper could construct. Many of the ideas I have seen and some that I've tried, required a very frequent clean out. The best method would either be self-cleaning, or one that would allow you to do scheduled cleaning, perhaps once a week.

If you have such a method, tried or ''on the drawing board,'' I'd really like to hear from you. You can email it to me, preferably with attached drawings or photographs, or post your thoughts here, so we can all take a look. I'd love to trade some ideas on this subject. If permitted, I'd like to make some web pages available to post some of the system ideas, pics, and drawings, with full credit given to the contributor. My email address is

Suspended Solids Question [In reply to] Can't Post

Here it seems I reply to my own post! No matter, I can do this.

If you would like to see what I'm doing with the information I am asking for, take a look at my web site. The address is:
http://www.livingjewels.com

On the menu on the left side of the home page, click on the "Do It Yourself" link. Here, you will see what I have gotten so far, and find out what will be posted there in the future.

I have seen many good ideas on this web board and will be contacting some of the people that posted then and ask for permission to post them on my web site. I just sent out a newsletter to those who have subscribed to it, telling people they should visit this web site, as it is one of the best I've seen.

So, if you have something that you've built yourself for your pond and would like to share it on another web site, let me know, I'd love to see it.

Suspended Solids Question [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Mike,

The settlement chamber is definitely one of the important part of a filter system that we can use to trap heavy suspended fish waste, discharge them easily so that we can spend more time enjoying our koi rather than struggling to clean our filter.

Many pond owners use a simple settlement chamber as shown below (drawing by Hans Ham)

The settlement chamber basically consist of a series of walls and carlnets to block heavy waster and the waste fall to the bottom can be discharged regularly by pulling the standpipe. Alternative, one also can install an automatic discharge system using timer controlled solenoid valve as shown in the following picture provided by Frank Chong

With proper settlement chamber, you bio filter will only has to do the job of treating dissolve ammonia.

Cheers

Khoo,

I thank you for your reply. I have seen many interesting designs and pictures posted on this site, many with your name on them. I think I will study the web site and make a list of the designs that I think would be useful for the Do It Yourself people in my area. Then, I will contact the people who posted those designs and ask for permission to post them on my web site.

Before this weekend is over, I will place a link to the Malaysia Koi Club web site on my links page. I think your web site has much to offer!
