If you are smart you will listen to a good Koi dealer on this. Rock bottom ponds are great for plants and a few inexpensive fish, but for nice Koi they can spell disaster. The rocks and gravel will trap wastes in an anaerobic environment and create a breeding ground for the wrong kind of bacteria and disease organisms. They also cause injuries to Koi quite easily if they spawn or just play rough sometimes. With rocks in the pond, (most pond dealers don't mention this part when they sell you all those rocks) you have to drain the pond, remove the Koi, power wash and vacuum the bottom of the pond, every year. It isn't easy or cheap to do, and you gain nothing by having them in there. Once the carpet algae begins to grow they blend right in with the liner anyway.
