To Rock or Not to Rock Can't Post

Hello Everyone,

I have been hearing different things about covering the liner with river rock or pea gravel. Most of the advice is for laying river rock, but I was just recently told not to from a local koi dealer. He recommended just leaving the liner bare inside the pond.

Thanks! Wink

If you are smart you will listen to a good Koi dealer on this.
Rock bottom ponds are great for plants and a few inexpensive fish, but for nice Koi they can spell disaster. The rocks and gravel will trap wastes in an anaerobic environment and create a breeding ground for the wrong kind of bacteria and disease organisms. They also cause injuries to Koi quite easily if they spawn or just play rough sometimes. With rocks in the pond, (most pond dealers don't mention this part when they sell you all those rocks) you have to drain the pond, remove the Koi, power wash and vacuum the bottom of the pond, every year. It isn't easy or cheap to do, and you gain nothing by having them in there. Once the carpet algae begins to grow they blend right in with the liner anyway.

Hello, it is wise to ask KOI dealers about construction as well, many LANDSCAPERS will offer to build a pond, this is not generaly good, as a GOOD koi pond is designed and made with the well being of the koi being the principal concern, and this means NO rocks of any size in the pond, and on the edges where the koi can scrape them selvies. You would not go to a koi dealer for help about weed control in your lawn!
