To check ammonia or nitrite? Can't Post

I got a new pond around 3 months old, but only added bio-balls 1 month ago. I tested the water using nitrite tester and it seems like OK. Do you think that's because the nitrite level is low or actually the ammonia didn't get converted to nitrite which is the worst scenario?

Initially I thought ammonia can be converted to nitrite pretty easily or naturally so it will be sufficient if i just test for nitrite level.

Thanks.

i highly recommend u to test the ammonia using test kit, even of many years of experience i still rely on test kit.... u r rite, no bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrite means no nitrite...

When the pond is started, i don't even know there is such thing called bio filter =) I got gold fishes with a normal filter medium, coral, and charcoal(recommended by friend who got koi also). After 1 month, i start to add in Kois, around 7-9 of them. After another month, after reaching this forum, i put in bio-balls in the last chamber and subsequently more bio-balls in the second last chamber.

The balls are in for 3 weeks now. I'm also seeing little bubbles on the water surface, which i mentioned in another thread, but not sure what caused that also.

yes, 80% of it is submerged. Or should add some ceramic thingy as well?

hi there..

ceramic ring, lava rock, bacteria hse or even japanese matt is fine, just need frequent cleaning if submerged, too much waste cover the media can cause problem in the future..

Think i will try to add more bio-balls as well as get some ceramic ring. Planning to get an air pump to provide more oxygen for the pond water and may to to 1 or 2 of the bio-ball chamber. Worth the investment?

Hi there..

adding more areation to bio chamber is very good investment, adding more media in bio chamber also very good, more surface area for bacteria to grow on...

some media need frequent cleaning as they get clog easily...
