To wash or not to wash the filters? Can't Post

Guys,
May be you will want to answer me this...
If Bacteria is so important in a filtration systems... then how often do we need to do cleaning up of the filters? How deep a cleaning do we need to do? (please explain in details) If we do cleaning of all the filters would it the pond water turn green again?
Rgds,
Lenny [confused]

It is not advisible to clean your filter media too often and even if you wish to clean them, please clean lightly with pond water and only clean some of the compartments each time.

By now you should understand why coral is not suitable as filter media. If you use course green matting, you should be able to flush the dirt out easily from time to time. Coral. you really need to clean them thoroughly to remove all dirt. In the process, you also remove all the bacteria.

cch,
I am comfortable with your answers but I have some questions on the coral part.
Lets say if I need to do cleaning on my corals... after removing the old coral I replace it with a new once in... I know the old corals are hard to clean but what if after clean with water I leave it under the sun for a week or so? Then is it safe for me to use it back the next time when I need to do cleaning for the other sets of corals?

Hi Lenny,

In most case, coral will get very dirty within a period of 7 - 14 days. If you keep on washing and replacing the coral, then there will not be any biological acitivities as the bacteria will be disturb all the time. Each time you are placing new set of coral, you are starting from fresh again and for that part of coral to be fully colonised, you need possibly one month.

Bacteria will survive well under water with sufficient oxygen. When water is drain, it will further survive up to 20 hours (as reported by Doc Conrad) and after which, the bacteria will die.

Cheers

cch,
do you support my idea of washing replacing half the amount of used corals and new corals together after the cleaning up?
After reading what you wrote... this is my interpretation... "don't change all the different medias in the filtration system after cleaning up... use at least half of them back on the filtration system with the mixed of the new medias?
Please advise!

What I am trying to say is even if you wish to wash the filter medium, do not wash all of them at one go. If you wash all of them, you are going to disturb the whole filter system. Only wash part of it each time.

Hi Lenny & all,
"Back flash" is not uncommon to pple in this koi hobby. If you have this built, maintenance of the f/box is alot easier. Just flush out the heavy stuffs and thereafter top up the water.

Concerning coral shells:
Although I prefer cockles shells, I don't see any harm if you placed your coral shells at the last chambers. However, there are reported cases of diseases arising from the use of coral shells. So far, I have been quite fortunate and have not have that bad experience for the last many years.

Now coming to the question on washing the media and this is what I will recommend:
1. Don't even bother to clean them.
2. Move them out of the f/box.
3. Drained out the brownish water left behind by the media
4. Return the media.
5. Re-connect the f/system.
6. You are done.
Hope this help.
