Upflow filters. Can't Post

This may have been asked before, but I have a question. What are the benefits of an upflow filter versus a gravity or trickle down filter? I assume that an with an upflow filter you wouldn't get as much water flow from the filter. Is that right?

If anyone can explain to me the good versus bad about using an upflow filter for a small pond (about 800 gallons) I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

James

Hi, I'll assume you are referring to a type of above-ground single cylindrical chamber with inlet at bottom and outlet at top? What type of media do you have inside the filter? Is there a prefilter for the pump supplying the inlet? Water is flowing against gravity and also thru the media, hence flow rate will be slower. Pump and media may clog up easily if there is no prefilter to trap solid wastes before the pump. Advantages of such a system? Can't think of any yet. For your 800gal pond, it may be better to install a prefilter, a pump and a trickle tower filter. Any existing submerged filter may act as prefilter. Hope the above helps. Smile

This is similar to the design I am considering.
http://www.fais.net/~blondie/filter/biofilter.htm

The water enters the cylinder at the top but is forced down under the gravel through PVC pipe. It then comes up through the gravel and flows out an outlet near the top of the drum.

I will be putting a drain at the bottom (likely 4 inch drain) for easy removal of large debris. I also have a prefilter basket to catch larger debris just before the pump itself (non-submersible Sequence 750 pump). Does this sound feasible?

Also I do plan to build a trickle filter too from some wide diameter PVC pipe (likely 8-10 inches) to connect to a second pump I have going to a fountain.

Thanks for your input.

James

I made a mistake in my first message. It should say 1800 gallons not 800.

Hi, sounds okay to me. For the trickle tower, go for 12inch diameter PVC pipes if these are available. Good luck. Smile
