Vegetable or Plant Filter Can't Post

Please offer suggestions on building a plant filter. My pond is new, approx. 20'x25'x3.8' deep. How deep should the vegetable filter be? Pump or gravity fed? Should I use sand on the bottom for plants to root? Should water enter and exit from the top or bottom of filter? I'm planning on building it 12'x16'x1' deep.

Thank you for your help.

Vegetable or Plant Filter [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Kntry,

The function of the vegetable filter is to use plant to absorb the nitrate from the water. What most people do is to add plant to the last chamber and use pot with stone to support the plant. No sand or soil is necessary. Alternatively, you can also add an horizontal water way to lead water from the last section of the filter back to the pond and add plant along the water ways.

The overall arrangement is up to you as long as the root of the plant can reach the flowing water.
