White eggs/sponge problem in pond ? Can't Post

Hi,

NB: I wasn't sure where this should be posted (it's more to do with pond maintenance).

My 11 month old Koi pond recently developed a growth (on all the rocks, pumps ...any surface area). The growth looks like little white eggs that adheres to almost any surface in the pond. The "white balls" are about 1 - 2 mm across. Since then, there are white froth on the water surface.... this is most pronounce at the point where the water enters the pond from the filter.

The pond has been functioning well over the last 6 months and I have not added any fish/plant live into the pond in the last 2-3 months.

I have posted a picture of the "white egg growth" here : http://pwp.maxis.net.my/teohes/pondprob.jpg

thanks

Dear Teoh,

from the picture, it looks like unfertilised koi eggs.

My koi lays twice already. Fortunately, when they go on frenzy mating, all the male koi will chase after the female. We normally, capture them and put them in a breeding tank.(which is smaller). The unfertilised egg will turn white and fungus growing on them (hairy tread).

If your pond got some plants, they will prefer to lay there, compare to other surface. Try looking for small fry. After 1 weeks.

But, for your case, why the koi never eat the eggs?

Update: I don't know what it was ... but 48 hours after I reported it, it's all gone and the water is no longer frothing.

I did a 50% water change and added salt (about 1% ) to the pond in the 1st 24 hours and did a second 50% water change in the 2nd 24 hour period.

I will have to check out on Koi eggs....in preparation for the next time ! Thanks for the help folks.

Many things can be discounted but high ammmonia cannot. If it is indeed eggs, you should experience high ammonia. Did you test that?

Did it smell like someone urinated around your pond?

I did not test for ammonia....unfortunately.
I normally do an ammonia test once/twice a month. Ammonia tested nil about a week before the discovery. I will know to keep this in mind for the future.

Thanks

Oh yes, there was a clear distinct smell (I did not associate it with ammonia at the time ....)
