How often do you guys clean your drain? Or do you clean it at all? Smile Coz when I think about it, the big dirt like leaves won't go in the drain because it has a strainer on top isn't it? So do you have to vacuum it once in awhile or not?
Also how often do you clean the bio filter media? aside from bottom drain it?
How many drain do I need for a 24 ft pond? 2 or 3? Do I need a separate bio filter for each drain?

Hi Chingbee, a 24ft long pond would require abt 3 bottom drains. All 3 drain into one common settlement chamber. Therefore the question abt each drain with it's own biofilter does not arise. The bottom is flushed daily. The cleaning of whole filter will depend on fish load. More koi means more frequent filter cleaning, say once a month. During such a cleaning, settlement chamber can be cleaned thoroughly. The bio-chambers are rinsed by back-flushing with pond water to avoid loss of too much good bacteria. The leaves that get stuck at the skimmer inlets or sunken to the bottom of pond should be removed daily if possible by netting or vacuum. Smile

Dttk,

What is a settlement chamber? is this the same with vortex?

Do I put a separate pump for the skimmer? or does it go to the settlement chamber/vortex together with the bottom drain thru gravity?

You can Vortex to act as settlement chamber. Most koi keeper in Malaysia however use brushes or carlnet in settlement chamber to trap those heavy waste. The main purpose of the settlement chamber is trap as much solid waste as possible so that water entering the bio chamber will not contain this solid. There must be of course a proper flushing system to flush the settlement chamber on regular basis.

Hi, Ben is right. Most pond owners in this part of the world use the usual rectangular concrete settlement chamber with brushes and nets. The skimmer should have it's own drain to the settlement chamber. Do not join it to the bottom drain. Smile
