filters keep clogging Can't Post

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone can give me "GOOD" advice. I have three ponds. One is a 90 (or so) gallon with about 10 gold fish. The second and third ponds are about 250 gallons each. One pond has about 15 gold fish, and the other has three fish (and several babies). I am using the Pondmaster 1000 / with lava rocks in the empty space on the bottom as my filtering device on all three ponds.

Now for my problem… Last summer I had a nasty clogging problem with all three filters. It seemed that the filters would clog with a greenish sludge. In most cases, I couldn’t go more then two days without having to clean my filters. The water in the pond would be totally clear, but the filters would still clog. I’ve tried adding Bio Sludge and Phosphate Control Additives. I’ve also added a UV Light on one of the ponds. Nothing seems to help. In addition, my lilies and water lettuce will start off the season well, then start to die shortly into the season. I have plenty of aeration due to water features.

My local store recommended I change to the Pondmaster 2002 system. They say that I’m picking up sediment from the bottom of the pond and this is causing my clogging problem. I bought two of the 2002 system because I did want to “Up” my capacity for filtration… but I’m not convinced that this will cure my problem.

Can anyone give me some advice on keeping my filters from clogging???

Thanks,
Dave

I'll be blunt here: In my opinion, and in my experience, the pondmaster filters you are using just plain suck! As you know, they clog non-stop, and require a lot of effort to clean them regularly because you have to pull them out, take them apart, etc. You know the drill. I have nothing against pondmaster, I actually have been using one of their pumps for several years and I love it, but their design for the filters you are using is bad.

I'm in no way a pond expert, but I'll give you some basic advice...First of all, if it isn't too late, return the 2002 filters you just bought. If you can't return them, try to sell them all.
Get an external filter. They are much easier to maintain, and won't need to be cleaned nearly as often if built correctly.

If you are a "do it yourself" kind of person, then there are several people and several sites that can help you build your own for pretty cheap.
And with how small your ponds are, you can experiment without spending much money.

If money isn't really an issue, you can buy a fairly simple external filter and just hook it up. Also, a few brands have pressurized filters that can be buried wherever you want, and can be backflushed for easy maintenance.

Also, pond companies tend to exaggerate their filters abilities. I would recommend buying the next size bigger than what is recommended for your ponds. For example, if the filter description claims it can handle ponds up to 250 gallons, go with a bigger one.

If you can attach the pic would be easier to comment.. Having a direct suction filter is always the case but if you can build a simple settlement chamber regardless with fiberglass, plastic drums or bricks wall and place your pump in the next chamber. This is to ensure that the pump will suck the clear water and eliminate clogging as sample below:
