for the love of koi, please help!!!! Can't Post

Let me first say thanks for seeing if you could help me...then to my problems. I fell in love with my mom's new pond that I thought I can do this...I have such a passion for koi that I decided to try and make my own. I went to a few places and talked with owners in how to make one....most said "oh just get a pump and bio filter that will turn the amount of water you have in an hr, and of course a liner Smile". So I went to town and dug a hole 27 feet long and 18 feet wide, I made the pond start off at 4 1/2 feet the it gradually goes down to 6 1/2 feet. I bought the little giant bio waterfall and a stainless steel pump that does 5000 gph. I built a 4 foot waterfall with the bio filter, and put in a smaller pump with ball media to run a water bubble accent with. I put a few lights in...bought some beautiful koi. 38 ins. to my babies that my koi spawned. Thought wow all last summer as it was my first summer. This spring my water is merky, i have been in it several times trying to get out the rest of small junk out. Nothing seems to work. I don't want to rip up all the pond but willing to rip up aside or two. I feel as though I should install a vortex system

In my head i picture a 4x4x4 deep vortex, it is just a hole that I have dug in to a cone shape next to my pond. There is a pvc pipe attached at the top that goes in a single line towards my pond where it splits into three and empties back into my pond via three elbow pipes slanted in the same side ways direction. At the bottom of the cone shaped vortex there will be another single peice of pvc pipe, it will make its way back to my pond via that pvc pipe an split into two elbow peices that will reach to the bottom of my pond. I will attach a sump pump to this to force the watter through the vortex. I was thinking maybe some media to fill the vortex. I probably Do not have the right idea, thats why I am counting on someone to help me do the right thing by my koi. They will thank you I'm sure!!! -jo

You've got a pretty big pond, and it requires a filtration system with least 30% surface area a general rule.

When you say murky, do you mean green water murky? Either way, my first guess would be your filtration is lacking. Can you give specifics on what kind of filtration you're using?

Also check this site out for constructing a proper pond

I had a stainless steel sumergable pump that could suck up small rocks...it pumped 5500 gph to a little giant vortex chamber waterfall...but i think cause it was its first year so it was ok ...then this year i cleaned it and ran it so many fish 50 or so then i added 16 more large ones....that was my problem...now i have the pump splitting to the waterfall and half to a 110 gallon tub which comes in 2 inch but a bit restrained by a ball valve and goes into first then settles japenese type mats filtering with lava rocks on the other side then goes to second tup and hass to pass through a 23inch thick of mats the empty in 3 inch to two different pots to turn water in pond in a giant slow whirlpool action....i since then put a backwash system on the waterfall for easy twice a week cleaning....thinking running chlorine through it for a day and killing anything from being empty for so long....anything you can think might help?? pump is 5500 gph highhead that is 1000 watts

your description of your pipe work is a bit complex for me to follow. If you can post pictures that would be better. But first things first, how big is your filtration system? don't bother describing the pipe work. Just give dimensions.

lilkoi, you have a very large pond. By my calculations (and if your dimensions are accurate), your pond holds approximately 20,000 gallons of water. Considering that it's recommended that you turn over your water every hour to hour and a half, your 5500gph pump is insufficient. And even with such a large pond you have a lot of fish which is probably taxing your filtering system. You will probably require two additional 5000gph pumps for your pond and filtering if you want your fish to remain healthy.

Have you checked the nitrite, ammonia and pH levels? Is the water merky due to algae or is it dirty merky? Do you have a bottom drain and skimmer? Do you have aeration? A picture of your pond and filter system and some schematics may help people give you advice. Your filtration system isn't sufficient at present but it may also be your pond that is creating problems. Is it in direct sunlight all day? Do you have many plants and a rocky bottom? Post the pictures and you'll get better help. There are many DIY filters that you can find online that you can make in a weekend that can clear your pond water. Do some research, google search for websites of people making their own filters, they usually have a pretty explanation of the WHY of filters, mechanical, bio-filters, vortex chambers, and requirements for different pond sizes.

Hello, you WENT TO TOWN, and you should go back to town and buy a bigger pump! there is simple more water than 5ooo gl plus your koi are big, so you must check to see if you get a bigger pump or another one, will the bio material that you have be enough???? It is always better to GO TO TOWN on the filter system!
