is gravel and lava rocks enough? Can't Post

hi. i am new to the koi and pond hobby. i am recently constructing my filter and i have some questions to ask before i make any mistakes on constructing my filter. is it neccessary to have 3 or 4 differents filtering chambers? my friend told me that i only need gravels and lava rocks for the filter and that would be enough, is it? what kind of filter matting would i need if the lava rocks and gravels is not enough? thank you fot any comments

Hi koi-boi,

Do take time to register with this forum !

You will basically need at least three chambers.

1) Settlement chambers
2) Bio filter
3) Last chamber for pumping water back to pond or add vegetation.

As for the bio filter, it is common that ppl created many chambers for it as the chamber wall will help to hold those green matting easily.

Even for the settlement chamber, you may have to divide them is several chambers to ease removal of heavy waste.

Hence it is matter of design that suit the space that you have.

As for the media, green matting will have a great more surface area than the gravel and tend to offer much better bacteria colonization effect. The surface area offer by gravel is comparatively small.
