piping. may i know how much it cost?
is that filter size enought for the koi pond?
i need to purchase a pump, which type of pump is suitable for 24/7 usage?

Re: [kenlaw] kenlaw koi pond start to finish [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi kenlaw,

Welcome to the forum. Based on your drawings, it is good to know that you already have some general idea regarding the filtration system. My coments are:-

1) If possible, try to provide a 4'0" x 6'0" length for the filtration chambers. With that dimension, each internal chambers dimension will have a clearance of about 1'9".
This mim. dimension is still possible for the workers to work on it during cement rendering stages etc.

2)Please allow at least a 4" mim. diameter bottom drain piping from the main pond connecting to the 1st. Chamber. In this 1st.chamber or Settlement Chamber, I think it is better to leave it empty rather than placing brushes in it. This chamber will collect the most waste products and normally you will need to clean and syphon out those waste products quite often even though there is a bottom drain discharge connected to the Dry Chamber for back flushing. Hence, it is better to leave it empty for that purpose.

3)I would consider having the following media into the other biological chambers:-
a) Chamber 2 - Brush
b) Chamber 3 & 4 - Japanese Mats
c) Chamber 4 & 5 - Bio-balls, Bio-rings etc.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Hi kenlaw,

You may purchase those from Arowana Specialist Centre along Jalan Puchong or Atarikoi in Taman Desa, KL. It is quite expensive and so most hobbyists will just do it DIY when concreting the pond floor together with the bottom drain. Just allow a
12 inches x 12 inches wide and say 3 inches drop sloping toward the bottom drain outlet for more effective waste products collection. Normally, you could purchased those rigid perforated plactic mesh to cover over the bottom drain to prevent small koi
from getting into the pipe.

Cheerio,
Thiam Hwa

Hi,thimhwa
May i know the height of dry chamber must shallow than the depth of the koi pond or
the other way around, dry chamber more depth than koi pond.
my friend one is the dry chamber deeper than koi pond, he need pump to pump the water to outside.
If the dry chamber shallow than we not need to pump the water but the water cannot drain all.
is may that correct? which one is better?

Re: [kenlaw] kenlaw koi pond start to finish [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi kenlaw,

The depth of the Dry Chamber will depend on the level of the nearest public drain level where the waste products are going to
be discharged. Ideally, if your outside public drain is very much lower than the pond depth level, you could just discharge it out
without much problem. The problem only arises when you are face with the outside public drain set at the same level with the
top of your pond. In this case you may either have to raise the height of the main pond or have a Pump-Fed filtration system
instead of the Gravity-Fed Filtration system.

I think it is very difficult to explain to you in words without having diagrams to show and describe the two different systems.
Alternatively, where about are you staying? If you are in PJ or KL, maybe you may want to drop by my house over the coming holidays and I will run you through the whole filtration system. I think that is probably more beneficial for you.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Hi kenlaw,

Yes, the bigger and deeper the better. 2 bottom drains for a 18' x 6' pond is good.

thiamhwa,
thank a lot for your great assistant during the visit on your pond at your home yesterday.
i really enhance my knowledge on this koi keeping hobby during the visit. i find that your DIY BIKI shower is very nice. i also try to use your opinion on the insulated the pond by using aluminium sheet to reduce the pond temperature. i will redesign my pond in order to achive low temperature water. i also need to built pagoda on top my fish pond to reduce sunshine to increase the water temperature. i decide to ask my contractor to stop work and redesign all the layout which
will include the aluminium sheep, pagoda and a DIY BIKI shower on it and extend the pond size to 18' x 6' x 4.5' if possible.
but this all need money. All this need to many discussion and more money to pump in.Angelic look forward for me reply after
the discussion with my contractor.
thank
best regards
ken

Re: [thiamhwa] kenlaw koi pond start to finish [In reply to] Can't Post

hi thiamhwa,
Today manage to talk with the contractor, the pond size increase to 20feet x 6feet x 4 feet depth (3 feet under ground and 1.5 feet above ground. above ground is more safety for my two active sons. ) The water lever is 0.5 feet below the pond and final water depth is 4 feet.
the filter will be 3x 15 feet around 30% for the pond size dept 2feet. (1.5 feet above ground+ 0.5 feet bellow ground)
The alumminuim sheet that you suggest to consider as insulation to keep water cool , the contractor will consider it and he suggest to add a layer of water prove coating on the inner wall of the pond to perform the same effect and more safe for the water leaking problem.
is that ok ? and do this coating can harm the fish?
For the bikki shower, we will stand by one pipe from the pump at the end of the pond, if i need to add in the DIY bikki shower.
From 10feet x 6 feet to 20 feet x 6 feet another 7.5 k gone. it ok for me to paid one time for the fish pond and use for many years.
best regard
kenlaw

Re: [kenlaw] kenlaw koi pond start to finish [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi ken,

Please note that the suggestion to use those double sided aluminium foil consisting
of a single layer of polythylene bubble layer sandwich in between plus another layer
of polystyrene foam boarding on the outside of the pond wall has not been proven
that this will reduce water temperature.

Before the commencement of your koi pond project, you may want to consider setting
up two mock-up sample in your garden i.e. one water temporary storage unit with this membrane enclosure and another without. Test this out to determine whether there
are any different in the water temperature between the 2 mock-up during day and
night time. If no different detected, then just throw out this stupid idea CrazyCrazy .

With regard to the depth of your filtration chambers, is it possible to go for mim. 3'0" depth instead of the 2'0" ? With 3'0" depth, it will accomodate more filter media and hence more good nitrifying bacteria in the biological chambers.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

ThiamHwa, sorry to cut your Q here.

Kenlaw,

I will suggest you to construct additional 2 main holes for easy maintenance in case of blockage in the future, strictly no L-shape pipe as shown in your plan. Please find my sketch in blue. Good luck.

Yes. With 3ft is sufficient, otherwise, a rectangle shape. Your contractor shall be able to advise.

Re: [kenlaw] kenlaw koi pond start to finish [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Ken,

Sorry, for the late reply. I have been away on holiday.

Regarding the sewerage piping problem, please check the depth of the last Manhole before it connect to the main sewerage pipeline. If it is much deeper, then you may want to consider re-enlarging the 2 Manholes beside the koi pond bigger to say
2'6" X 2'6" and deeper to allow a deeper sewerage pipeline run between the 2 Manholes. That will allow you to have a deeper pond. Alternatively, you may want
to also consider raising the koi pond wall higher than the existing ground level.

Please try not to re-direct the sewerage pipeline if you do not have enough space for
the bending flow. You do not want to end up with future sewerage system problem
which will clog up your sanitarywares discharge.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa
