new bio filter Can't Post

I want to set up a bio filter outside my pond.(size 12 X 8 X 2.5 )
I will be using a 2 ft deep cylinder drum with 3 ft diameter placed by the side of my waterfall. Is it enough just to use one external pump? The pump will sucks the water from the pond through the bio filter drum and flush out through the waterfall.
Please advice .thank you

Hi, sorry for the late reply. Why not use the cylindrical drum as a trickle tower biofilter? If you pump water directly from pond to drum, then you should use a prefilter to trap the solid waste before water enters the drum. Do you have an existing filter? If so use it as a prefilter and pump water from it into the drum. The filtered water from the drum can flow out thru a waterfall. Alot of info on how to build a trickle tower filter is found in here. Just do a search. Smile

Dear Muskk786

See link below on an interesting discussion on the merits of a trickle filter. Convincing. It's 5 pages long (has a diagram of a trickle filter) and once you're through, don't blame me if you start preaching it as well. Ha! Ha! [biggrin]

Anyway, as DTTK advised, don't forget to install a mechanical filter before your bio-filter to trap heavy wastes so that you don't clog up your bio-filter too quickly. Another thing is to size the bio-filter roughly 30% of the capacity of your pond and pump water through the filter at least once or twice every hour.

Cheers Smile
