new pond Can't Post

I am having a new pond built and am wondering if it is possible to have the existing 8' x 4' x 2.5' FG pond place at the bottom of a 4' deep excavated site and then have the remaining 1.5' (above the pond) be made out of concrete. The concrete part shall be 10' x 6'. Is this feasible? Reason being I do not want to waste the FG pond and I do not space to keep the same.

The filter will be made of concrete (underground) and will have settlement chamber, brushes, mattings, sand with the chamber housing the pump. The pump will direct the filtered water (hopefully) into a trickle filter and a trough (6'/7' x 1.5') which will contain plants with an outlet directly into the pond.

Can I have some views if the above is feasible? I am wondering how to fix a bottom drain to the FG pond if the above is adopted.

Any views, comments and criticism is very much welcomed.

In any event does anybody know how much it would cost to build a pond 10/12' x 6' x 4'??

Many thanks.

Hi Rong1

Welcome to the Koi Forum!

I have no experience in your situation but I am not sure if it is a good idea to put the FG tank in your intended new pond.

I can think of a few probelms associated with this.

1. How thick is the FG tank? If it is not thick enough, it may crack through wear and tear underground.

2. You may not be able to build a proper bottom drain with the FG tank as your base. You will have problems sealing the FG material if you drill or make a hole.

3. Aethetically it would not look very nice to have a pond partly FG and partly concrete. Smile

Unless, what you intend to do is to completely cover yout FG tank with concrete to strenghten your pond, which of course is wasting your FG tank. Maybe, you should just build a full concrete pond getting professional help and sell the FG tank! I am sure some new koi-keeper would be glad to buy it off you if it is in good condition and the price is right! Smile

Your intended pond measurement is just about the size of my pond. If you do it properly, then it should cost you around RM8K - RM10K.

Hope this is helpful. Let us know how much the pond will eventually cost you and perhaps post some pictures of your new pond. I am sure it will be beautiful.

All the best!
