I am building a concrete pond and am having a discharge chamber built. Will I need a pump in this chamber to pump water/sediments that has been discharged here? Will I also require a submersible pump for the pond to circulate the water in the pond?. The newly built pond is expected to be 12'x6'x4'. Any advice?

Many thanks

How will the water get to the filter chamber ?

Bottom drain ?
Surface skimmer ?
Pump ?
Overflow ?

Once we have this answer we should e able to give you much more advice.

How do I build a skimmer? Any other suggestions/comments for this pond?

Many thanks.

Hi Rong, I have a few questions for you. (1)Is the bottom drain connected to both the 1st chamber(settlement) and the discharge chamber? (2)Is the discharge chamber part of the 1st chamber? (3)Is the discharge chamber separated from the 5th chamber?(I hope so!) If the discharge chamber is a dry sump, the waste water should flow away via a drain at the lowest level. If this is not possible due to level being too low, then place a pump in the sump to pump out the waste water. Yes, you should circulate the water in the pond by having a pump in the 5th chamber. In fact, this pump will "pull" the water from 1st chamber thru the 5th chamber. Smile

Hi dttk, the bottom drain goes directly to the discharge chamber which is separate from the 5th chamber. An OMNI pump (with 2 outlets) will be in the 5th chamber to pump filtered water out to i) a fountain/waterfall and ii)a trickle tower. I hope to connect a venturi at the trickle tower outlet.

The pond is going to be 13'x 6'x4.5' although there will be a terrace/shelf of 1.5'(W)x 1-1.5' (D) along the 13' length (as I have a sewage pipe to contend with!). Can you please give me some suggestions as to the capacity of the filter (length, width etc). It was proposed that the filter be 6'x6'x3'/3.5' including the discharge chamber though I fear this may not be sufficient. Also the submersible pump will be at one end of the pond to circulate the water. Any comments, suggestions would be most welcomed.

Many thanks.

Hi Rong, thanks for the additional info. There's still one more thing that I'm not very clear about. Do you mean that the bottom drain is connected to the discharge chamber which is isolated from the rest of the filter OR is part of the 1st chamber(settlement)? If it is isolated, then where is the water inlet into the 1st chamber? Do you have mid-water inlet? Based on the surface area of the pond, your filter should be at least 4ftx6ftx3.5ft deep and it should be located at the end away from the sewage pipe. But 6ft is rather too short a length. One suggestion is to have a "U" or "hair-pin" shaped filter. This would increase the length of filter to almost double. The total width would surely have to be more than 4ft in this case. 6ft would be nice(width of each chamber is 6/2 or 3ft). Remember that the water flow is up-down to one side(left or right), then backwards at the hair-pin curve, and to the other side where the last chamber is. You could incorporate the discharge chamber at one end. If you are not able to visualise this, I'll be happy to fax over a diagram for easy understanding. If possible do not place a pump in the pond as the outlet from filter should be sufficient to circulate water. Why not have 2 bottom drains instead of one since the length is 13ft. Smile

Thank you dttk for your comments and suggestions. My apologies, the bottom drain will be connected to the settlement chamber. I am also intending to place a pipe at 2' from the bottom of the pond for the water to flow into the settlement chamber by gravity. Is that okay? The bottom drain will be a 4" pipe which my contractor tells me will be narrowed down to 2" into the settlement chamber. What is your suggestion? Am getting more confused with the contractor's suggestion. I shall be grateful if you can fax the diagram of the filter to me at 03-79578522.

Many thanks.
