pond construction Can't Post

hello

i am planning to build a new pond asap ,my available space is 6ft wide by 7.5 feet long and i was planing to make it a slopping bottom 4ft shallow end to 5 ft deep end .

what i am looking for is links to sites that show construction using concrete blocks for walls and a concrete base for the bottom ,i really want to go for a bottom drain but not really sure how to do it ,also i was thinking about using G4 to cover the concrete and make it water proof .

i was thinking about making a 4-5 chamber filter out of blocks at the end of the pool as well and using g4 to seal it ,would this be ok ??

regards

Mark

Hello, first of all, if you are looking for a site to help you build a pond, there are things to consider, one is Do you know how to lay bricks or blocks? this will effect the integrity of the pond, what I mean is that if you dont know how or have little experiance in this, you will probabily do it wrong and end up with leaks somewhere along the line. And #2 look at the logistics of this construction, Blocks, sand, and gravel for this size means a big truck or several truck loads and unloading the blocks and carrying them to the site. So one day with at least two guys will be spent getting the blocks and sand and then unloading this and carrying them to the area. When you buy these materials they can be loaded on a truck by a fork lift, but when you get home????By the way when I say truck, I dont mean a toyota 4x4! And now for the slab of concrete, this must be poured all at one time, so for this size you will need a cement mixer and at least 3 guys, 2 for just the mixing and one for the cement work, and I would say you will need 4 or 5 as most ( friends) are not the most dedicated helpers as they get tired very fast! so take this into consideration, plus the ability to lay blocks, which in of its self is something that takes alot of practice to do!
Much of the work I get today is fixing or rebuilding ponds that were built with the best intentions, but by people who dont have the experiance in this area!!!! hope I shed some light on your ideas!

hi thanks for that :)

i used to work as a labourer/brick layer many years ago for a building company ,i also used to be the guy that would bring in tons of sand /cement/brick/block/tiles to the other workers .

so i know how to dig the hole ,lay the foundations ,mix cement/concrete and lay brick ,also my back garden is roughly 20 feet from a main road so getting materials here wont be a problem .

labour wise my brother and father have said they will help me :)

what i was looking for realy is pond design and other things like should i screed the wall with cement before i seal it with G4.

anyway thanks for your help and i do agree that some people should leave jobs like this to people that know what there doing .

regards

Mark

You can read lots of good info on pond construction, including some start to finish pond builds at these sites.

You can also look for Koi38's pond build thread on this forum. He did an above/below ground pond with concrete block that is excellent. Lots of good step by step progress photo's too.

Here's another handy link on filtration I stumbled on to recently. Very good filtration info, complete with explanations to help a newcomer understand the wherefore and the why of things.
