pond construction Can't Post

I have a plan but I need help. I know what I want my pond to look but am not sure to go about plumbing. The sizes are not including the edging of the pond (some advice on that would be helpful too!) Here is a rough diagram of what I will be doing:

The black lines are where rocks will go to create small waterfalls. The small pond at the top will have no koi in it. I have read about the benefits of the plant Anacharis but I have heard koi will eat them so I thought those plants could go up top.

What will I need filtration wise? I plan on putting 5 koi in there. I don't want to overcrowd but would 6 or 7 be pushing it?

I somewhat understand filtering methods as I have a cichlid fish tank. Would I ever have to perform water changes in the pond? What are some things I can do to keep nitrates down? What will I need filtration wise? How big are the tanks/pumps? Are some filters underwater?

I want to put the filters up at the top near where the small plant pond is although the inlet is in the bottom pond. Will this work? Will it be hard on the pump? What pumps/filters are recommended? how big should my bottom drain be? Do I need a skimmer?

Could I build this myself? If so what will I need? I live in San Diego so it rarely gets below freezing. Is the pond too shallow? What would materials cost?

I am sure I will think of more questions. Thanks in advance! I am looking forward to finally having a koi pond!

Re: [Jamie142] pond construction [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Jamie142,

Im a student in this forum, I would like to apply what I have learned from here and to all "Sifus" please correct me if I am wrong..Wink

The plan for your propose pond looks great... with the rapids flowing down to the main pond and it would be very happening.

Let see what I can propose for you:

1. First thing for sure is that, your main pond is too shallow, you have to make it deeper to a minimum of 3'-6' deep. This is important for the comfort and the healty growth of the koi.

2. The best diameter for the bottom drain is 4". If you want to simplify the maintenance of cleaning the pond, you should have a Dry filtration chamber that require no pump, it works by gravity, just by one pull the debris will clear from your pond. However to build this the filtration has to be the same level with your main pond.

3. The cheapest way to construct is using the pond liner which you can DIY.

4. Below is my propose filtration system.

OK what say you dear "Sifus"... Wink

Best regards
