pond leaking badly..plz help Can't Post

hi my contracter just finish building my pond, and once filled with water it started leaking badly, water level is going down about 1-2 inches a day, its a large pond ( 20f (l) x 6f(d) 15f(w) ) so im guessing 1-2 inches cannot be because of evaporation...

the pond is made of concrete, there was a waterproofing agent that was mixed with the concrete while in the process of building..

no fish in it at the moment..

plz help, i really dont know what to do
tried looking for the crack but cant find it, there are a few hair line cracks tho, water is still leaking....

thanks
joshua

Try search this forum for leakage test method. posted a while back in 2007.

How thick is ur wall and base? Reinforce with steel?

leakage normal occurred at joints in concrete tank i.e. joint between wall and base, different lift of wall
section. there are many type of water proofing material that is safe for fish that can be applied on to the concrete surface.
go hardware shop look for those use for drinking water tank proofing.

the wall base is about 4-5 inches thick and yes it was reinforced with steel.... i think i would be applying a coat of epoxy which is mirakote 340 a/b.
is this a good coat?
what should i apply for the joint between the wall and base? any special product?

sorry for all this questions....

construct a fillet between the base and wall will help strengthen the joint and then apply epoxy. Have no knowledge of mirakote, as long as it is safe for use in portable water tank.

when ur tank is empty, look for stain marks, moist patches on the wall and base. u should plug them before apply epoxy for u need dry, clean surface

Hopefully I can give you a couple of things to try!!! ... Am there and still trying!!!! I have a concrete pond... was fine for 25 years... decided to build it deeper..used layers of mortar and stone... lost 4 inches/day... I have reduced by doing the following(My problem is a joint between a concrete walk that goes over the top and the pond edge so hopefully a bit different than yours....Thinks to try...
1. Have you tried flooding the pond from the outside... can tell you where the leaks are.
2. If you can find the leaks, fill with Hydraulic Cement (Lowes)
3. Epoxy paint (Leslies Pool store can order it for you)
4. Epoxy water based paint ... Aquapoxy
5. There is always a plastic liners .. from Home Depot

Re: [jimar1] pond leaking badly..plz help [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi guys...I have a pond thats around 20yrs old...maybe older...but recently it started to leak too...like a couple inches a day! I dont know if I should start a new thread yet so I am writing here....
I have lots of fish in there right now. So we are constantly adding water and anti chrorine.
How do I find out where the leak is?? I thought the other day it leaked to a certain point and then the leak slowed down...and I think it might be on the sides. I live in PJ area. Is there anything I can get locally that I can paint on the walls to seal cracks? Urgent advice needed. Thanks in advance!

Let the water seek its level ..leak will be just above or at the level... add water back about an inch...get a swimming pool indicator(red or use red ink with water)..drop around the sides.... the red water will sucked into the leak...

let water seek its level, flood pond from outside..water will trickle into the pond ..you will see the places it is cracked.
any of the following will fill cracks;
1. If you can find the leaks, fill with Hydraulic Cement (Lowes)
2. Epoxy paint (Leslies Pool store can order it for you)
3. Epoxy water based paint ... Aquapoxy
4. There is always a plastic liners .. from Home Depot
good luck

You should be able to get some from any hardware or DIY store. I have seen liquid based selant before but not sure how effective it is.

Also, you will need to consider how and where to house your fish while you attempt to fix the leakage.

Re: [Sumeragi] pond leaking badly..plz help [In reply to] Can't Post

this raises a question. I am thinking of building a pond now with brick or stone wall. Size is abt 3.5m by 2m and 1.2m deep. Any idea how thick the wall needs to be to hold the water?

I was told that I need two course of bricks, otherwise it will crack in time. I guess this maybe true, but if I use those limestone blocks, I may need only one layer, but how thick is required?
