Re: [qqmeng] pump fed filter system problem? [In reply to] Can't Post

here are the bio media (beside subtract from ehiem) and air pump i m using.

still can't say that they are good, but so far aint no problem from them yet.

the best thing is tht the bio media comes with 3 packets of bio starter ..some kind of good bacteria to kick start or cultivate the bio media maybe..

dont get me wrong... i am selling it

Re: [njin9] pump fed filter system problem? [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,

i hv cleaned the pump... still i see debris around the pump area i reckon it must be pulling the water from the above. i m thinking of taking the pump s casing and installing a plate like this one http://www.tetrafish.com/sites/tetrafish/catalog/productdetail.aspx?id=1276&cid=379 but it is not available in where i m staying now. any advise on this? Unsure

Debris won't get sucked into the pump?
1) Check if it's algae and fish poo. Sometimes fish poo gets tangle and embedded in algae, therefore wit's harder to get sucked in. You might want to scrub to remove some algae. I think you get a lot of sun in your area? This along with your nutrient rich water (excess dissolve food and fish waste) is ideal for algae.
That's why you need to do regular water changes. Some out, some in.
2) You don't have good water movement. Try a leaf on the waterfall, and see where the current takes it. That's just for surface. For below water, try a bio-ball, and see where it gets pushed. This will give you a good indicator on the water pattern and if you have a dead spot and how fast/slow the water is moving.
3) Move the pump apart so it collects at different areas of the pond instead of at one spot. I think one of your pipes(green) is fixed in place? See if you can spread the green one away from the blue one.
4) If your pump is rated at 8000lph, and its not sucking in a lot of water, then it might A) have debris stuck inside which is impeding flow. Dissasemble, clean out and reassemble. Odds are, when, you turn off the pump, you might get some back flush. B) your getting too much pipe/hose resistance. The hose is too small or/and too long. As water moves along the hose, it will get more and more resistance, slowing down significantly, especially if there's head height involved. So you will need to shorten down the pipe, or make the pipe bigger. What size hose/pipe are you running?

**** After thinking about this, if you have the pump cleaned and assembled, and it still doesn't have a stronger pull of debris around it, then I think it's only pulling water from above, which is lighter and easier for the pump to do (physics: path of least resistance). If that's the case, the you might have to think up of a solution/modification to the pump such that it has a plate over it (like a BD) and only sucks water lower to the bottom in a bigger radius.

I hope all this makes sense to you. Keep me updated.

P.s. **I hear that a lot of people around Malaysia and Indonesia use coral as a pH buffer. I'm not to sure about this b/c I heard that coarl is hard to clean, and they can contribute to some particular disease. Search around on this forum.

Hey Derrick, hope your pond water has cleared up. Are you cleaning the filters less often?

The item you had linked to is a reverse bottom drain, usually for out of pond pumps. You don't have to buy it since you have a perfectly working submersible pump. You can try a 'temporary solution'. Get a bowl or plate and put it on top of the pump. The larger the better. If you are using a plastic bowl, make sure it is heavy ,doesn't float or you might have to put a brick or rock on top. With the bowl(big and shallow), it can not be touching the bottom of the pond. If it totally covers the pump and one side touches the pond, it will redirect the pull of water. This also applies to the plate. The side that is down touching the bottom will collect more crap behind it, whereas the side that is up will get cleaner b/c most of the pump suction will be redirected to there (path of least resistance). Ideally, you should want 1 inch off the bottom. I don't know how big your hose is, but if your bowl is plastic, then you might want to cut a half circle for the hose. Otherwise just keep it uniformly elevated at the same height to accommodate the pipe if you're not comfortable cutting plastic. You might have to build a tripod so the pump sits inside and the tripod legs support the bowl from the inside. Option 2 is to put 3 bricks down so it looks like a triangle on the pond bottom. Put the pump in the middle, and then put the bowl on top. Adjust the bricks so the bowl sits on the middle of each brick. A large plate is better. If you think your first is big enough and strong enough to knock the bowl or plate over, then you might have to put a brick or rock on top to anchor it down with some weight. If that's too ugly, put a water plant in a pot and put that on top of the bowl or plate. This is a temporary solution. If it works for you, then you can keep it as is, or make some minor modifications to make it more permanent.

You don't have to go out and buy everything. If you really want to buy that Tetra reverse bottom drain, then go ahead. But that thing is easy to build.

BTW did you do the experiments to see if your filters are actually mechanically filtering? Less tiny particles in water? Most likely.
Also did you move the two pumps further away from each other?
And did you do the experiment to see the water flow? That's pretty important.
And are you also vacuuming the crud out of the pond everyday? It's just to help the filters out, so they don't have to do it. That means you don't have to clean it later.

keep me posted.

Re: [njin9] pump fed filter system problem? [In reply to] Can't Post

i hv yet to come out with my vortex filter.... but surprisingly the blue filter is doing great now. less washing needed... i have only washed the 1st 2 chambers filter media i.e. brushes and the j. matt..... and vacuum out the chambers. the base of the last 3 chambers are very clean...

but one thing extra tht i did was, the water inlet now is hitting directly onto a j. matt just rite above the water level creating lots of air/bubbles. so, i m skipping the air pump.

but still i have to vacuum some of the debris out. but it is so much lesser now. yah... i have tried to make a plate/bowl as what u hv described... and it is not very good looking... :(

water s moving from the water falls to the pump... so water is moving except for one small part where the movement is relatively slow ... my pond s a big 8 shape.

i hv just moved the pump to tht spot... will keep you update. :)
