Because my dad is a cronic procrastinator...
BUT, we finally got a good koi pond base. Its got slopped edges, and I would discribe the shape to be a "giant Ramen bowl"...lol. It may not be the best for my first, but we have no harmful wildlife (etc...cranes, racoons) and the cats have respect for fish, they don't go for them (we have a mud pond filled with catfish and brim and turtles) and they are just fine. The cats somtimes drink form them though, lol. The pond is average size, I don't know the total gallon size (like 2400 something or more.)... but my dad does, it is, however, quite suitable for six fish or more. (I'm only gonna start with 3 or 4 than see how that all plays out). The pond should be up and running this summer break, so I'll keep it posted.
I'm thinking of getting/starting with a Showa, a Kohaku, a Ogon (white) or a Black(mule) koi. Just to be balanced, I also though about getting one of those kinds who are quite brave and encourage hand feeding...sorry I can't remember what they're called.
