The following pic show a settlement chamber.

The purpose of the settlement chamber is to trap heavy fish waste and discharge them from the settlement chamber from time to time. It is to ensure that the pond water leaving the settlement towards the bio filter will not have any heavy fish waste.

On the left, the two inlet is from the pond and on the right is water going towards the bio filter.

Use either brushes or carlnet as shown in the pic above to trap fish waste. Those fish waste when hit the barrier such as brushes or carlnet will fall and accumulated at the bottom of the chamber. When you flush the settlement chamber every two days, you will be able to bring out the fish waste from your system effectively.

Your bio filter will then concentrate on treating those disolved ammonia and convert them to nitrate which you can remove by using trickle filter and vegetation.
