winterizing the filter Can't Post

hi. first off i would like to say you guys are doing a really good job on helping people that keep koi and help the koi give the maximum results to their owner. ok. now here is my question. During the winter months, where it is cold where i live, the bio filter won't work anymore because the temperature will be too cold. in this case, how can i keep the amonia and nitrite level down? should i put in carbon and zeolite for the winter months? my second question. the outlet of my filter goes directly to a waterfall. and i heard that i should turn off waterfalls during cold months because it will disturb the fish during semi-hinbernation. is that true? but then how am i supposed to keep the filter running without through the waterfall? do i put the outlet directly into the water? if so. wouldn't the pressure of the outlet also disturb the fish? thank you for any comments to my questions.

winterizing the filter [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi
Welcome to the board. We don't have winter season in this region and it will be really difficult to answer your questions.

I think (and based on my assumption) the koi will be asleep and there is no worry about the ammonia and nitrites. The temperature will be so cold that even the parasites and bacteria cannot live. Nitrites will be inactive and so long if there is no feed, ammonia is not a threat.

Honest, post your questions at koivet.com or koimag.com and you get better answers.

Humbly apology.
