pond setup help Can't Post

assuming the pond is 10 feet x 30 feet ... with a depth of 4-4.5 feet.

what do you think of this pond layout?
changes to the drawing is that the vortex 3 and skimmer will be serviced by the self priming sequence ... and the vortex 2 by the sequence in the middle

Hi mike

Are you relying solely on the trickle tower to do the biological filtration? How many fish do you intend to keep? To rely solely on the trickle tower you would need a very fast turn over rate with sufficient and reliable media. Bacteria house is the best media i believe and you will need a lot of them. The lay out is good considering every bottom drain has its own vortex to trap all the mechanical waste which requires minimal maintenance. The water should be constantly moving based on the points water is sent back to the pond, so no stagnant water despite the sharp corners of the pond. The skimmer is well placed within the flow direction of the water surface which makes trapping floating elements easy. The circling flow will also help the wastes to be directed to the bottom drains. The setback is just that the pond requires 3 pumps to achieve all that and won't be that economical (if it is a concern at all)

Overall it is a great lay out. Only if i can have that kind of set up.......Wink

Cheers

Halim

the sand filter will be filled by something called "ultra bio media"
and the moving bed will be filled by something called "kaldnes media"

the trickle filters will be filled with jap mats and or bio balls.

how many fish?
40?

Hi Mike

those two medias, to my knowledge, are still unavailable here in Malaysia. i've read about kaldness media and it seems the media must be kept moving inside the holding tank in order for it to work efficiently. How do you keep them moving, waterjets? and what is "moving bed" actually. Now i'm asking you instead, mikeSlySly. If those media really works well as they are made out to be, 40 is not a huge number then.

Cheers

BTW what is your local time now?

the ultra bio media is made by aquaultraviolet.com
the kaldnes media is made by evolutionaqua.com

a moving bed is the term evolution aqua uses ... its basically a floating media that can easily be mixed and churned by an airpump (works like a shower but it is submerged) the website boasts of a 100 or 200 litres of kaldnes can cope up with 500 grams of food fed to the fish per day.

evolution aqua products is available in singapore by max koi farm. although i plan to get mine from canada or the US.
the ultra bio media i already have with me ... i also bought this from canada.

i am from the philippines ... at the time of this posting, local time is 4:48pm

the aqua ultraviolet sells the ultima II bead filter. it is basically a sand filter with the ultra bio media inside (instead of sand) the size of the sand filter and amount of ultra bio media i have is most likely rated for a 4000 gallon pond

thanks for the info. I might consider those two medias in upgrading of my pond filtration in the future. What do you think about bacteria house? Any experience of using them? a luxury item here in Malaysia.

i have read the bacteria house "sales pitch"

i would have believed them if they had stopped at "our bacteria house has 1000 times more capacity than other media"
but they had to add stuff like, "BH will disintegrate poop ... no need for settlement ... etc. etc."
and when they said BH gives off some sort of far infra red BS.

hilarious.

I would suggest you experiment with the bacteria house. It would be fun if your findings differ from what okayama farm had claimed. In fact one Mr Mike Snaden of Yumei koi had been researching on this bacteria house and it seems the water is pumped directly into the trickle tower with bacteria house without having to go through any mechanical filters. All the poop somehow disintegrated in the trickle tower.

Any specific reason for not believing the sales pitch? or its just something too good to be true.

I supposed it'll take a koi kichi like you to clarify this, mike.

BTW the second diagram provides a better picture. Is the lay-out for your next pond?

Re: [kelabukoi] pond setup help [In reply to] Can't Post

im not an expert but ... i actually read the article by mike snaden. thats the article i was saying that mentioned the far infra red rays.

anyway ... here's what bacteria house is - its a bio filter media (for argument's sake 1000 times better than other media) that can hold more good bacteria. so, if i were to get a filter thats more than enough in filtration, it would achieve the same purpose. but to claim that bacteria house can disintegrate poop without explaining why and HOW the poop disintegrates with BH and not with other media.

its just like me saying, if you use my media, your koi will be nicer ... you the owner will be handsomer, because my media is very cute and nice. i need a scientific explanation on why something does something.

in conclusion: BH boasts of extremely high surface area. fine. how is this related to disintegrating poop? how does BH release these so called far infra red rays. where is the scientific conclusion that far infra red rays actually does some good.

in addition: my media also produces gamma rays which will make your kois grow extremely big and green ... when angry.

please take note that i am not angry at anyone.

its just that, money is very hard to come by. if im going to blow off some dough ... i need my head rubbed the right way.
"so gua e tao"

btw. the second drawing is the edited version of the first one. this will most likely be my next pond. (after the one thats already being built)

Mike, we know that science does not explain everything that happens in the world. If we can't explain something scientifically, it doesn't mean we must simply reject it. In today's world result counts. As long as we can benefit from something we need not necessarily question how is it being done.

actually there are no results that pertain to the effects of far infra red rays.

with regards to disintegrating poop ... that i have to see. and i do hope to be proven wrong so i can buy that BH!
